Very true. I don't know the history of those in Rome. It was certainly a far less diverse city than we expected given its size. It already had a 10 year route to citizenship for non EU citizens. Some will have been first generation immigrants, and others, as you suggest, born and bred in Italy.

In a similar vein, when my wife and I lived in Rome (early 2020s) a large but much less diverse city than London, there were times in the day and evening when we were the only, or two of a small handful of, white people on buses. Most were low paid immigrant workers and only the bus was affordable.

Utterly typical of the Israeli government to launch a large scale attack on Iran and then warn that Iran should not respond or else Israel will attack more heavily. No country in the world would take that and not defend itself.

The inadequacy of the UK response to the actions of the Israeli govt and its army is hard to stomach. There seems to be a terror of being accused of anti-Semitism (perhaps justly since Labour will always be fair game for that accusation by the right wing press).
