My Dutch boss was adamant that it was perfectly fine to call the whole country "Holland".
Of course, he was from Amsterdam.

Really? I'm pretty sure they used to, and the DRAE doesn't put a regional note on it.
I remember asking Mexican coworkers about "norteamericano" a decade or so ago, and they were both clear that not only did it refer to people from the US, but they wouldn't use it to refer to Canadians or Mexicans
Hell, you can douse it with mayo and strawberry jam if you want. Sprinkle it with cinnamon. Add asparagus and Limburger. As she said, it's your mouth.
I wouldn't. But I wouldn't put ketchup on it, either. π
Beat me to it.
23.11.2025 03:12 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I was a computer science researcher for thirty years. I can probably count in one hand the number of times I had a "time limit" that was measured in less than (multiple) days. And on no hands the number of times it was closed book.

07.11.2025 21:07 β π 10 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0To be fair, in Franklin's case, at least, at the time, you had to be alive when nominated for the Nobel, and she died in 1958, four years before Watson, Crick, and Wilkins received it.
07.11.2025 20:58 β π 12 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Dr. should be used in all references for physicians, dentists and veterinarians whose practice is their primary current occupation, or who work in a closely related field, like medical writing, research or pharmaceutical manufacturing: Dr. Alex E. Baranek; Dr. Baranek; the doctor. (Those who practice only incidentally, or not at all, should be called Mr., Ms., Miss or Mrs.)
Anyone else with an earned doctorate, like a Ph.D. degree, may request the title, but only if it is germane to the holder's primary current occupation (academic, for example, or laboratory research). Reporters should confirm the degree holder's preference. For a Ph.D., the title should appear only in second and later references. Do not use the title for someone whose doctorate is honorary.
I don't know if they've tweaked their rules on this since then, but as of 2015, they said that for non-medical doctors, they use the title "only if it is germane to the holder's primary current occupation", only if it's earned, and only if requested to.

As far as I know there's only one other Evan Kirshenbaum in the country (probably the world), a lawyer in Rhode Island.
And yes, I do occasionally get email and texts intended for him.

The media thing hits both ways. They mainly hear about the sane parts of Oregon the same way we hear about the crazy parts of, e.g., South Carolina.
I just got back from a trip to Japan with Canadians who said that they'd be happy to take California, Oregon, and, Washington if it wasn't for the fact that we'd double their population.
