@greenparty.org.uk has selected me to run for Monument ward in May. That’s the ward I represented before I was Mayor. I’ll be part of an increasingly strong Green team. Greens won the recent South Jesmond by-election. Labour vote fell from 43% to 17%, most switching to the Greens.

Last week @mothinali.bsky.social visited us in Newcastle. Mothin announced @greenparty.org.uk now has 184,000 members! 🎉

One of those new members is former North of Tyne Mayor, Jamie Driscoll. We've worked alongside Jamie and @majorityuk.bsky.social during local elections + now Jamie is a green 💚

We are calling for the immediate release of the hunger-striking prisoners on bail, full access to independent medical treatment without obstruction, and an end to the use of prolonged pre-trial detention against political activists.

Detention must not become a mechanism through which life-threatening harm is inflicted on individuals who have not been found guilty of any crime.

The denial or delay of essential medical care to people in state custody represents a profound breach of the Government’s duty of care and raises serious human rights concerns.

Yet the Government has still not formally acknowledged the strike or engaged with the prisoners or their families. UN Special Rapporteurs have raised concerns that aspects of the prisoner's treatment may amount to enforced disappearance.

For several of those detained, time spent on remand is expected to extend to nearly 2 years before their cases are heard.

This hunger strike constitutes one of the largest coordinated protests within UK prisons in recent decades.

These prisoners have not been convicted of any offence. They remain held on extended remand under increasingly restrictive conditions, including limits on correspondence, phone calls, visits, access to reading materials, religious practice, and experiencing highly isolating conditions.

The situation is critical. Multiple have been hospitalised, including Kamran Ahmed and T Hoxha. There are serious concerns that prison authorities are failing to provide urgent medical care despite clear clinical warnings that prolonged food refusal carries a high risk of irreversible harm or death.

Despite being convicted of no crime, these 6 British citizens are facing death, with silence and inaction from our Government.
6 prisoners — Qesser Zuhrah, Amu Gib, Heba Muraisi, T Hoxha, Kamran Ahmed, and Muhammad Umer Khalid — have been on hunger strike for over a month.
