New publication from our lab! Our new study, published in iForest, explores how Mediterranean woody species enhance their flammability through different functional traits — revealing multiple, species-specific strategies shaped by fire.

To identify the distribution of Ailanthus altissima, examine its changes over the years, and predict its future dynamics, we carried out fieldwork at Hacettepe University’s Beytepe Campus

Pine planting: Ministers 'dreaming' about amount of suitable land, say green groups The government claims to be on track for net zero emissions but official figures show 280,000ha would need to be planted to public land to do it.

Planting a massive chunk of public land in pines is not our solution to climate change. This is continuing short-term thinking and it's a net negative for biodiversity. Some pine is fine, but not at this scale.

Restoring natural fire regimes can be considered an important option for the sustainable management of Mediterranean forests and for combating forest fires, which are expected to grow in size and intensity in the future.

Low-intensity fires can reduce fuel loads and help prevent larger wildfires in the future. However, in Türkiye's Mediterranean ecosystems, where human settlements and land use persist in many areas, much more research is needed to effectively use fire as a tool for wildfire prevention.

In our recent publication, we identified Muğla as the region in Türkiye most affected by lightning-induced fires. We suggested that managing forests and fire regimes in light of this information could help prevent larger wildfires in the future. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Wildfires have always been a natural part of ecosystems, even before human activities made them more frequent and severe. Lightning-driven fire regimes are a prime example, as seen here in Marmaris, southwestern Türkiye—the region with the highest occurrence of lightning-induced fires in the country
