Wiki Mod: Just as a heads-up, we're making a bigger change overall starting tomorrow.
Part of that will be to return to using the English language as our basis for genders/lack thereof as well as for pronoun usage on wiki articles.

An official announcement and details will come out sometime tomorrow when I am not braindead.

The Hollow Knight Wiki plans to reverse the use of other localizations to gender characters unstated in English.

Doesn't make the original, indirect use of supposed leaked unverifiable documents any less baffling, but at least things are on the right track.

The wiki mods are currently voting on whether to overturn this decision thankfully. However, even ignoring the potential enbyphobia, this was a total clown show. Genuinely, what were they thinking.

Even if we could trust this translator or know their motives, (which we can't,) using information we can't cite, that's only "verifiable" to us, even indirectly, is unethical and we shouldn't do it.

Don't do harassment. But if you're curious, here's the reason why Phantom, Lugoli, Last Judge, ect have suddenly been gendered on the Silksong wiki, when previously they were unstated.

Can we stop using translations as a source for Phantomโ€™s gender and just leave it at Unknown or something
Latest comment: 20:48 9 comments 6 people in discussion

I keep seeing translations being used to define Phantom as female on here and I want to say that in the German translation of Silksong Phantom is referred to with er/ihm/sein, which are masculine pronouns. If we allow translations as sources for a characterโ€™s gender, we should be adding โ€œpossibly maleโ€ to the list, no? Translations are wildly inconsistent for character genders because many languages donโ€™t have neutral pronouns and itโ€™s probably safer to stick to the text written in English, right? We're in the process of reviewing and updating genders based on priority and accuracy of sources. We recently got a list of official genders that Team Cherry gave to the translation teams, which we are using as the basis if it's supported. It seems as if some of the teams were matching the "neutral" approximation of their language, while others were using the gender guide.
If you want to talk about this more effectively, I recommend joining the Discord linked in the sidebar, where we have already gone through several waves of this discussion. [REDACTED MOD] 22:28, 3 November 2025 (UTC)

"We recently got a list of official genders that Team Cherry gave to the translation teams" can this list be added to the page as a source then? Because currently there is litterally no evidence that the Spanish translation is any more accurate than the German translation, or the English dialogue Team Cherry themselves wrote for the journal. For the moment this decision reeks of transphobia so please add this supposed list as the source for Phantom's gender as soon as possible. [REDACTED USER] 17:50, 4 November 2025 (UTC)

Yeah like if there's a gender list please show us you're just making it harder for everybody by not showing it [REDACTED USER] 19:08, 4 November 2025 (UTC)

It's unfortunate, but the Hollow Knight community does suffer from a transphobia problem, especially in regards to nonbinary or gender non-conforming characters. It took years for Vessels to be acknowledged as genderless, so I don't imagine this being fixed anytime soon for any Silksong characters. [REDACTED USER] 07:22, 4 November 2025 (UTC)

The Hollow Knight Wiki respects the real-life right for expression of gender identity and gender presentation. The issue is when the information we use on the wiki NEEDS to have sources cited. There are several issues preventing us from simply using "they/them" for silksong genders.
Again, we have discussed this at length on the Discord if you wish to converse there. For the time being, we have a system and are sticking to it. [REDACTED MOD] 17:56, 4 November 2025 (UTC)

Apparently the Silksong wiki is using localizations from heavily gendered languages to justify labeling characters like Phantom as "female" and not "unknown" or "enby" because "we have a super secret localization guide we're not sharing or citing."

Localization Hello everyone! This week weโ€™re taking a look into the art of localization. Localization In our last update we hinted that Outer Wilds is going to be localized to eleven different languages! For...

Does this mean the Hearthians are all male? NO! In most localization they tried to preserve the Hearthians genderless nature. They just couldn't dance around it like they did with other localizations.

For Polish, the first challenge we have encountered when translating Outer Wilds was the grammatical gender for use in Hearthian texts. In Polish, this affects not only pronouns, but also e.g. verb forms. Eventually, we have decided to use male forms, although for a moment we have toyed with the idea of inventing neuter forms โ€“ but these would be too unusual for the players.

Third, pointing to gendered languages like Spanish is fundamentally flawed. Like, the Outer Wilds devs have confirmed that the hearthians are an agender alien race.

However, when localizing it to Polish they just gave them all male pronouns because they didn't want to make neos.

Should we label the Green Princes twin-cests because the Portuguese localization says they're twins? Hell no we discard it in favor of the game confirming it's just some Soul Mate AU shit.

Second, the localizations are far from flawless. The Simplified Chinese localization from what I heard was a dumpster fire, and the Portuguese one apparently mistranslated the Green Princes as TWINS, like Sailor Moon censoring lesbians by calling them """Cousins""" except accidental.

05.11.2025 01:11 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

If we can't verify the authenticity of this "localization guide" how do we know this isn't falsified like how people spread misinformation around Bridget's gender with a falsified statement claiming to be from the devs.

First, maybe cite and share the localization guide instead? Because so far we can't validate or prove any of this. Most people are assuming you're making it up for transphobic reasons. If you can't cite it don't fucking use it.

We're in the process of reviewing and updating genders based on priority and accuracy of sources. We recently got a list of official genders that Team Cherry gave to the translation teams, which we are using as the basis if it's supported.
