Driving north on Vancouver Island highway 1 near Black Creek. So many endangered toads trying to cross the highway. None will be successful, they all will die, the way is completely blocked. This makes me so sad. We take so much from nature and refuse to give back.

Victoria author and cancer warrior starts online fundraiser 'to give back'
Novelist Jean Paetkau says women should recognize the symptoms and share them with their doctors.
Iβm very grateful to the Capital Daily for featuring my ovarian cancer fundraiser this week. Mark Brennae wrote a really lovely account of my cancer journey, books, and online friendships. #yyj #fuckcancer #cancer www.capitaldaily.ca/news/victori...

That sucks, I wonder why the groups weren't interested. Writing to mayor and council of the municipalities is a good start, maybe an op-ed or opinion piece in local news? Also, I'm so sorry about those folks you know, I've been following the news and it's heartbreaking.

Four pinecone-like pendants made from folded pieces of reclaimed roofing copper.
Detail showing two pendants and the contrast between the patinated top surfaces and bright copper undersides.
Detail looking straight up at the overlapping copper petals of three pendants.
Just finished: a set of pendants made from reclaimed Parliament copper. The patina was left as-is on the top sides, and I painstakingly cleaned the undersides back to clean metal. Will be installed as a group of 5. Sizes range from 20" to 27" diameter.

Without immediate intervention, the last reporters in Gaza will die
July 21, 2025
AFP has been working with 1 writer, 3 photographers and 6 videographers, all freelance, in the Gaza Strip since its staff journalists left in 2024.
Along with a few others, they are now the only ones left to report what is happening in the Gaza Strip. The international press has been banned from entering the territory for nearly two years.
We refuse to watch them die.
One of them, Bashar, has been working with AFP since 2010, first as a fixer, then freelance photographer, and since 2024, as lead photographer. On July 19th he managed to post a message on Facebook: βI no longer have the strength to work for the media. My body is thin and I canβt work anymore.β
Bashar, 30, works & lives in the same conditions as all Gazans, moving from one refugee camp to another under Israeli bombings. For > a year heβs lived in utter destitution, working at extreme risk to his life. Hygiene is a major issue for him, with recurring bouts of severe intestinal illness.
Since Feb, Basharβs been living in the ruins of his home in Gaza City with his mother, 4 brothers & sisters and the family of one of his brothers. Their house is devoid of any furnishings, except a few cushions. On Sunday morning, he reported that one of his brothers had βfallen, due to hunger.β
Even though these journalists receive a monthly salary from AFP, itβs no longer enough to buy food, or they have to pay completely exorbitant prices. The banking system has collapsed, and those who exchange money via online bank accounts charge a commission of up to 40%.
AFP no longer has the ability to provide them with a vehicle and there is not enough fuel to allow these journalists to travel for their reporting. Driving a car means becoming a target for Israeli airstrikes. AFP reporters therefore travel on foot or by donkey cart. (alt txt continued in next post)
A horrifying statement published today by the Editorial Committee of the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.

Tableau of people at or around a bus stop in Victoria, BC, on a sunny afternoon. There is a trio of young girls eating snacks on the left, a pair of woman chatting to their right, three women apparently waiting at the bus stop itself, and a woman passing on a bike on the far right. There are a brick building and a fairly large urban tree in the background.

A solargram photo taken from the Winter Solstice of 2024 (21 Dec) to Summer Solstice of 2025 (20 June).
It's a 6 month long exposure taken with a beer can pinhole camera, it shows the sun's movement across the sky during that time period, each day the Sun scribes a line on the paper in the pinhole camera. The bottom line is Dec 21 2024 and the top line is 20 June 2025.
This kind of photo makes the movement of the Sun during the day into visible trails on the paper in the camera.
There is a long orange-yellow arc going across the paper showing the whole 6 months. There is a shadow of my tree on the image, the tree blossomed during the exposure. Shades of blue and pink are on the paper too. There is a black kind of semi circle at the top of the image, that's where the water was disintegrating the top part of the paper.
6 month, long exposure pinhole camera Solargram.
Paper wet - part was beginning to disintegrate from water intrusion. Had snow & wind storms & lots of rain May/June 2025.
Pinhole is tiny - I was surprised paper was so wet. Very pleased with result - even more pleased I got the angle right.
