It was lovely to summarize my PhD at the Geomicrobiology Society's Research in Progress meeting and to be honoured with the best talk award!

Visiting the Wellcome Trust's Zelfo wetland crop fiberboards was also a must on the way home

Land Use Consultation - Defra - Citizen Space This site contains consultations that are run by Defra.

What do we want England to look like?

Less than a month to respond to DEFRAs land-use consultation: consult.defra.gov.uk/land-use-fra...

Let's make it more peaty, better for nature, accessible, adaptable and supported in a just way for those working on the land

An drawn picture of a Typha plant and a common reed plant. In a circle around these plants are the potential end uses for each of these plants. For Typha this includes bioenergy, starch, bioplastics, restoration, bioremediation, construction, agricultural conditioner, fodder, oil, food and fibres. For common reed this is furnishings, construction, paper, bioplastics, agricultural conditioners, restoration and bioremediation, growing media, bioenergy, fodder, food and starch

What is the market for paludiculture crops? ๐ŸŒฑ

As part of my Defra Soils Fellowship I've been looking into the status, size and potential for paludiculture markets in England.

Science on science on science in the #FalklandIslands

I've loved being part of the knowledge development across Weddell Island, learning how the #peat functions, the links with hydrology and what invertebrates are up to.

A photograph of a peatland landscape with mossy rushes in the foreground. A ditch, now infilled with sphagnum moss takes you further back in the picture towards a tree line in the distance. It is a beautiful blue sky day.

Last week I visited the Winmarleigh #carbonfarm. It was beautiful to be immersed in #sphagnum but it was also great to see how peaty grassland can be converted back to bog.

The trip brought together scientists, farmers, environmentalists and policy makers with fruitful conversations.

The main reason for visiting the Falkland Islands was to help the #LandRecovery Workshop. Here, the Land Recovery Programme Consultation was launched revealing it would cost just ยฃ3.6mil to set aside 30% of the islands for nature whilst still generating profit for farmers #30by30 #peatlandsmatter

There were many opportunities for outreach over the past two weeks in the #Falklandislands, a favourite is always visiting the school to talk about why peat is just the coolest

Here is our attempt to core through the classroom floor after the field trip was cancelled

Despite seeing more rain in the past two weeks than in the year I was living in the Falkland Isalnds, it seems most water is pouring straight out between the clay and peat layers with surrounding peat still dusty dry

What are the greenhouse gas emissions savings associated with paludiculture? Paludiculture is a potential solution to minimising the 1.5% of total UK emissions from lowland peat.

What are the greenhouse gas emissions savings associated with paludiculture?

As part of a DEFRA fellowship I had a go at trying to answer this question and create an emission factor for Paludiculture in the England!
