Native languages need radio, which is at risk of being lost - High Country News As public media is threatened after cuts from Trump administration, Indigenous radio also face threats to how they preserve and grow language.

The growth of Indigenous language through radio is at risk, along with the rest of public media, but cultural reclamation at large will persevere.

πŸ’‘ The study reveals how federal and state systems often fail to recognize the urgency of gradual, compounding environmental threats, and how this failure leaves Tribal communities to bear the disproportionate impacts from climate change.

Fire suppression in the boreal: "There's too much fire now" - Woodwell Climate In boreal forests, which are experiencing intensifying fires, fire suppression offers a way to protect both people and carbon-rich permafrost

For Woodwell’s Dr. Kayla Mathes, community perspectives have driven home the need for fire suppression as a tool to protect people and climate.

❄️ Across the Arctic, nomadic reindeer herders find themselves on the frontlines of a rapidly changing world. Their traditional way of life, deeply intertwined with the seasonal migrations of their reindeer herds, faces significant threats from changing land use and the impacts of climate change.

The Arctic on Fire An episode about Arctic Indigenous Peoples' relationship with fire, how wildfires are changing and contributing to environmental change, the detrimental effects of banning Indigenous cultural burning ...

These are just some highlights. The whole pod is worth a listen. Thank you to Arctic Council team and all contributors for convening this meaningful conversation! #ArcticFire #climatesolutions arctic-council.org/podcast/arct...

"You know, the scope and size of this challenge will require .. much more cooperation and much more kindness to each other. Much more understanding of each other, much more understanding of the issue than we've seen so far. But I feel that people can get there," says Alexander @gwandaii.bsky.social

"Decolonizing wildland fire management is a big step forward in proceeding through a world where the Arctic is on fire," says #ArcticCouncil's Jessica Cook, who co-narrated the podcast.

Natali emphasizes that we have agency, and that every #climate action matters. "It's an interconnected world, and greenhouse gases are globally mixed, so every action we take, no matter where we are, will both help to protect the Arctic and then in turn feedback to people elsewhere on the planet."

"Ultimately, fossil fuel reduction is the answer," says Rogers. "But we don't have time to rely on just that: We need natural climate solutions and we need to look at the intensifying fires in these high-latitude regions ... We need an all-hands on deck approach to tackling this issue.”

30.06.2025 14:56 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

co-lead Brendan Rogers @woodwellclimate.bsky.social says rethinking management practices and restoring cultural burning rights are critical to meet this moment. "It's a convergence of values: not only carbon and climate, but also what’s happening with smoke, human health and Indigenous sovereignty."

Chief Bill Erasmus of Arctic Athabaskan Council shared his father's cultural burning practices: "it's clearing the land so that there's less chance for burns. And so he used to do that and it never got away from him because you do it when it's not windy and you do it when the ground is still damp."

30.06.2025 14:56 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Cultural burning is a holistic set of practices many Arctic Indigenous communities including Gwich'in use to take care of the land and one another. "It's in relationship to each other as relationship to our past, relationship to our ancestors, caretaking things for the future," says Edward Alexander

"You can walk in a place where there's fire and you think there's the surface of the ground is there," says Natali, "and you put your foot on the ground and your foot will sink down into the ground, because there's no more support, because that fire literally burned underneath the ground."

30.06.2025 14:56 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Lead Sue Natali @woodwellclimate.bsky.social explains fire's effects on thaw: "And so this ground acts as a very good insulator against this warm summer temperatures. And it protects the permafrost. So when fire comes through and removes that, then you're essentially removing that protective layer."

"65% of Gwich’in homeland where I'm from has burned in my lifetime," says Edward Alexander of Gwich'in Council International and @woodwellclimate.bsky.social. "It would be a wrong assumption to assume that the 2023 fire season is an anomaly or is as severe as wildland fire in Canada will be."

Smoke plumes from North-American wildfiresΒ detected by ICOS stations in Europe Since mid May and through June, wildfires have been raging in Canada and the USA. The plumes caused by the fires have now reached Europe, as observed by ICOS Atmosphere stations spanning from South Eu...

ICOS stations in Europe have detected the presence of smoke plumes from the North American wildfires, indicated by a sharp increase in carbon monoxide (CO). Photosynthesis appears to have helped reduce some negative impacts of fires.
