The allure of delusional self-adoration can be powerful. When a junior high vice principal made me cut my hair (picture your obedient correspondent at 15 with a blond Robert Smith- circa-Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me rats' nest), I was much offended. I believed, in the sincerest possible way, that I was a unique, very special, possibly heroic 15-year-old, one destined for great things, and, above all, one whose autonomy and personal sense of self had to be respected at all
times, damn the rules. It all seemed incontrovertible at the time. But I am not in junior
high school anymore. Pete Hegseth somehow is.
Princeton owes him a refund.
And his tailor owes him an apology.

Only one of them has immunity from prosecution and we are in the midst of a constitutional crisis where they rightly believe that a lot of extraordinary things could happen

None of them has any future beyond this administration so they’re acting like it will never end in the hopes that will somehow make it so

it’s all power projection, calculated to make their very precarious positions seem hopelessly entrenched and discourage opposition

They are *definitely* afraid of the consequences, though.

a small cream colored dog stares up at us. this is Boksil, swaddled in a grey robe, and tucked underneath a thick blanket on a bed. her little paws poke out of the robe's sleeves, and her toe beans are in full view. her tiny pink tongue mlems from her grinning mouth.

a higher angle of Boksil. a small yellow pillow rests beside her for scale, and her eyes are closed peacefully as she rests swaddled under a white blanket, looking very cozy.

This is Boksil. She is reaching levels of cozy previously unheard of. 12/10 a trailblazer (IG: with_bokdanji)

Today marks the two-year anniversary of the horrific October 7 attack.

As we mourn the 1,218 lives lost that day, let us also keep alive the dream of a lasting peace and a better future for all.

Ceasefire now. Every hostage must come home. And a safer world for everyone.

I’m. So. Tired.

I don’t just want you to pay attention to Chicago because I want you to understand our plight. I want you to see how hard people are fighting and know wtf you’re made of. We’re not just fighting for this place. This is for all of us.

But I didn‘t say otherwise. Promoting racketeering activity is, however, something that is criminalized in the U.S. in ways that is not in Japan. RICO and its state law equivalents are international outliers.

07.10.2025 16:17 — 👍 2    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

being a member of a criminal enterprise is criminalized many times over, state and federal, and it does not require that you do anything that would otherwise be a crime

07.10.2025 16:01 — 👍 3    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

participating in a gang that does crimes is illegal here even if you do not commit any separate crime. That is not true in Japan.

07.10.2025 15:58 — 👍 3    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

it’s not like these laws aren’t tough it’s just the toughness takes an entirely different form because of sociopolitically contingent stuff and illustrates why it’s so silly to generalize about being “like Japan”

07.10.2025 15:51 — 👍 4    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

There are so many things going on that i wouldn’t just say “yes” to the first question but the second—yes. You can get designated as a violent group if you um do violence, at which point there are fewer things you can do and it becomes easier to arrest you and prosecute you and shut your group down.

Yeah the yakuza are not outlawed. it is not illegal to be a member. american conspiracy law is weird, broader, and harsher than pretty much everywhere else in the world.
