Thinking that regulation through “deal” is a thing, is the problem. It can’t be normalized. Got a problem with what universities are doing? Make a rule about it following public notice and an opportunity to comment. Think the law is already on your side? Sue them. Not this. Not up for negotiation.

Just to anticipate the response that putting all your cards on the table is bad negotiating strategy—that is the fucking point. It is not a negotiating strategy. This is an entirely illegitimate way for the executive branch to interact with educational institutions. It needs to be outright rejected.

“Ok fine. Our offer is you get to do what you were doing, you just have to sign this form.”
“No. We don’t need your permission for that. Fuck off.”

“This is false. We will make no deal.” Should be simple, unless it is somehow not.

As Trump targets DEI, Eastern Michigan University plans no significant changes An EMU official said the university continues to review its policies and programs in response to recent federal guidance but doesn’t anticipate significant changes.

Somebody has to do the equivalent soon or this will just keep going. No, no “deal,” never.

It would be excellent if he were just to say “we are never making a deal with this mafia-ass organization, we’ll see them in court if they really want to press this lawless bullshit further” but I notice that he did not.

As with Cersei, though, given how profoundly shitty it is to be female at the time and place, you end up almost rooting for her more often than you probably should.

Hallgerd has zero time for bullshit, ever. She also has way too much time arranging for people to be killed, most of whom do not deserve it.

What’s striking about this saga in particular is how virtually everything is structured by law despite the notable absence of a state

Oh and there were no public officials except one dude who got paid to speak the law so you better come strapped and backed by people who come strapped if you want to sue someone

Glad you asked, the Althing… did all the things. It was the legislature, the judiciary, and a meet-the-neighbors-and-settle-blood-feuds deal all at once.

Hallgerd is in fact quite similar to Cersei, both in substance and in style, whereas Gunnar is Ned Stark. Hilarity ensues.

Gunnar rode to the Althing. Before he left home, he said to Hallgerd, 'Be good while I am away, and don't make trouble if you have to deal with my
friends.'
'The trolls take your friends, she replied.
Gunnar rode away; he realized that it was no use trying to talk to her.

0.000% of Communism has been built. Evil child-murdering billionaires still rule the world with a shit-eating grin. All he has managed to do is make himself *sad*. He is starting to suspect Kras Mazov *fucked him over* personally with his socio-economic theory.

Plus a vaguely phallic monument that just, you know, sits there, and some walls dedicated to the memory of people who aren’t even alive

How are you going to talk about the OBB without talking about all the money for ICE. Or not talk about all the executive orders. Or… nvm.

Moyn: This is where Trump's ultimate significance so clearly lies: in continuity, not change. He
busted a lot of norms from the first in 2017. Cries of abnormalcy and authoritarianism
arose before there was evidence to back them - and evidence has accumulated through both terms. Charlottesville and January 6 in the first - intimations of deeper reservoirs of hate that could come out of American woodwork, with Trump coyly pandering to the mobs - were preludes to both mass and targeted immigration roundups in this term,
reminiscent of classical fascism. Yet climactically, and when it mattered most, Trump has chosen to walk in lockstep with the dead consensus in domestic and foreign policy of the past half-century - not merely among conservatives, but among many
liberals.

“Climactically, and when it mattered most” seem to beg very pressing questions that I wish had been directly answered. Although, I suspect that the answers wouldn’t satisfy me.
