Old Soviet joke:

A man keeps buying a newspaper, looks at the front page, then discards it.
One day, the seller asks: "What are you looking for?"
The man replies: "An obituary notice."
The seller says: "The obituary is in the back of the paper."
The man replies: "This one will be front page."

Bringing this back

We don’t make much that would fall under “adult content”, but I think it is very wrong for payment processors to seize moral control of what can be sold.

‘Adult content’ has long been the canary in the coal mine. And it is wrong and dangerous for art and creators to be attacked this way.

#LastNightInDnD we managed to trick a Hag by wording a deal very carefully. I suppose it was more tricking our tired DM as a real Hag would've seen through it, but they all count right

I'm sure it won't come back to haunt us later.

Downside, the rest of the party now know my sword is cursed #dnd

In the real world, however, Keir Starmer also used the words “incalculable damage”. And as importantly, none of the levers he pulled fix the “problem”:

“Incalculable damage” - a ludicrous claim for many reasons, but my favourite is that the measures in the white paper get the UK to something like c350k a year net. Incalculable damage, fixed by getting down from c500k in a “normal” year post-Johnson’s visa changes.

Cheltenham 2025 – Day One SUPREME NOVICES HURDLE Kopek des Bordes (4/5)  is the talking horse and while he’s looked very good so far, especially the last day,, I’m hesitant to kick the festival off with an odds-on shot…

Looking ahead to day 1 of the Cheltenham Festival next week with a few wild thoughts

The magic of Gene Hackman is that he somehow played the same person and a completely different person, simultaneously, in every movie, and it always felt exactly right. If you saw his face in a movie when you were flipping channels, you stopped to watch. Because it's Gene Hackman.

Always wondered how the Star Wars Emperor could start with a battle-hardened army and end up with an "entire legion of his best troops" being beaten to death by teddybears with sticks.

Then Hegseth ended up as US Defence Sec. And now yeah that makes sense.

Today’s show was my last at CNN. My closing message: It’s never a good time to bow down to a tyrant… don’t give in to the lies. Don’t give in to fear. Hold on to the truth… and hope.

The point of diplomacy is not to “internationally deliver” the domestic policy goals of a government, it’s to build the relationships& gather the expertise needed to protect the safety& prosperity of the country in a dangerous world that is constantly changing.
Wrong priorities, insular thinking.

FTSE 100 Index between 13 Jan and 17 Jan midday, showing the a rise of 3% in five days, to a record high. UK 10-year gilt rates chart, Monday-Friday 17 Jan 2025, midday, showing a drop from 4.9% to 4.6% in three days. UK 30-year gilt rates chart, Monday-Friday 17 Jan 2025, midday, showing a drop from 5.45% to 5.15% in three days.

A take it journalists' social media timelines and columns are full of reports of several days of market confidence recovering, borrowing rates dropping, the FTSE hitting record highs, and praise for Rachel Reeves. No? ~AA

Would just generally be helpful if the media didn't cover the bond market as if every movement is Truss 2.0, which the media has basically been doing ever since Truss 1.0

side view of a British destroyer, with two funnels, at sea.

Meet the destroyer HMS Glowworm. In April 1940 she was forced to fight the German Heavy Cruiser Admiral Hipper, ten times her size, and Hipper's destroyer escorts.

Her extraordinary last stand earned her captain the first Victoria Cross of WW2. In part because THE GERMANS nominated him for one /1 🧵
