A literal ray of hope tonight: I was caught Venus through the trees just a few degrees over the horizon after sunset. It'll get higher every night and be poised beautifully for viewing in a month or so. Not the best apparition since it never gets very high after dark, but it's nice to see it again.

Fun thing to think about very briefly: who currently has better lawyers, the United States or Nintendo

Chapter 1 of Moby Dick, page 1

The phrase ‘Call me Ishmael’, the first sentence of the book, is highlighted in blue, with careful highlighting on the very big C at the start. Above this, written in ballpoint pen ‘His name’

Love the glimpse into the beautiful mind that notated this used copy of Moby Dick I got

It really is fascinating how overt it now is that there are certain - really not controversial - ideas that you aren’t allowed to say on television.

Duval, in full priest garb, swinging in an SF park next to a child.

my favorite Robert Duvall role is where he appears as a priest on a swing for 2 seconds for no apparent reason in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Now, this is a film that you show to someone you care about
as a way of possibly trying to say something that you can't put into words. Poster for the 1995 film HACKERS

Is it bad when the only people who can afford Super Bowl ads are the aliens from They Live and the guys making Skynet

Mammon, such a wonderful word. Mammon. They're saying it can replace God. I don't know, but they're saying it more and more. Consumes the children, not nice, but God's no angel either.

A major newspaper publishing guide to help people identify the munitions their government is using against them is a real "Late Republic America" timepeice that future historians will comment on.

“He’s killing us in the streets and we still have to pay our taxes in April” is an incredibly compelling point.
