I just hope everyone who likes to mention that they'd love to learn Irish and asking Irish speakers to help them and not leave them out are also talking about investment in the Gaeltacht when politicians come canvassing. I hope they're asking for new local Gaelscoileanna and more GA career paths

Me when I accompany my mother to parkrun: Spare a thought for those of us who can't do parkrun ☹️ Because we have no interest in trying and have done nothing to facilitate a situation where we might be doing parkruns one day ☹️☹️

@caitrua.bsky.social great advice there Cait and not just for learning Irish some good guardrails for micro learning or anything creative

10. Finally, do a little each day, but keep on doing it. Some days I only had time to watch our beloved @tg4.bsky.social
for 15 minutes that day so that was all I did, but I did it every day. Tá tú in ann. Go n-éirí go geal leat agus bail ó Dhia ort ❤️❤️❤️❤️

9. Almost conversely, if you meet a native speaker who doesn't really want to speak Irish to you, try not to take it personally - there's a lot that comes with being a native speaker of a minoritised language and it's rarely if ever a reflection on your abilities.

8. Practice Irish by sending utterly demented voicenotes to Irish-speaking friends or family. Want to rant for 10 minutes about men? Valid! Turn it into a learning opportunity too.

7. Learning a minoritised language does mean taking initiative and creating opportunities to learn and speak it sometimes. The path can be a lot more winding compared to learning majority languages, but it leads to the same place.

6. If there's an aspect of Gaeilge you're struggling with and you don't need to understand it right away, put it down for a bit and focus on something you're good at. Genitive case frying your brain? Go to a ciorcal comhrá agus ná bac leat leis na rudaí eile.

5. You're allowed to feel frustrated sometimes, it doesn't mean you're failing. Remember when you learnt your first language and threw tantrums because you couldn't speak it properly? Less socially acceptable to throw them as an adult but the feeling is real.
02.11.2025 11:20 — 👍 15 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0
4. Stop saying 'sorry for my bad Irish' when what you mean is 'I feel insecure about my level and would like reassurance'. It is normal to feel insecure! But your level will not improve through constant apologising I fear.

3. You can learn Irish while having 0% DNA and this is just as valid, you don't have to pass a weird ethnic purity test to love the language and I'll fight anyone who says different.
02.11.2025 11:19 — 👍 41 🔁 2 💬 1 📌 0
2. Do not let nitpickers put you off. Accidentally missing a fada or messing up the genitive case is fine and valid. If there's someone who only interacts with you to correct you and never encourages you, they're acting in their own interests and not yours.

1. Learning isn't a race. Don't compare yourself unfavourably with other people who may've been learning for less time than you and who you perceive as being more fluent. In all likelihood they're probably just more confident. There are many ways to measure proficiency.

“We pay your benefits” – towards a more thoughtful approach while screaming at fascists
We’re not the chant police. It’s fairly standard to hear chants you disagree with from our side on counterdemos against the far right. The aim of this post is to provide some food for thought about the wider impact of chants like “We pay your benefits” when directed towards the fascists.
We wrote a little thingy (1/3)
