People learn nothing.
Arendt wrote so clearly about the increasing targetting of people, starting with non-nationals, then dual nationals, then a succession of undesirable nationals. Nothing will protect you. Fascism requires an ever larger circle of enemies to blame for its own failings.

Feminist social epistemology teaches us that diversity is a *requirement* for scientific excellence. We need each other to know the world. We need each other to solve the thorny problems that threaten our existence. Knowing the world is a group project, and everyone has something to contribute.

Book Launch: Sexual Racism and Social Justice: Reckoning with White Supremacy and Desire Join us for a special evening celebrating the publication of the groundbreaking edited collection, *Sexual Racism and Social Justice: Reckoning with White Supremacy and Desire.* The New School will host authors (from here and abroad), artists, and performers -- including our very own professors, staff, and students -- as we celebrate a text that brings together research, reflections, and creative works unpacking the role of sexual racism in the very foundations of our societies, determining the ideas, bodies, and systems positioned as desirable.Later, there will be comments from the editors, short talks from book contributors and artists, and a final Q&A moderated by a special guest. Simultaneously, there will be a sophisticated art installation to engage with, followed by wine and cheese reception.

Excited to be in New York next month to promote our book, "Sexual Racism & Social Justice". If you happen to be in town, please join us at The New School (registration link below).

How should the advancement of large language models affect the practice of science? | PNAS Large language models (LLMs) are being increasingly incorporated into scientific workflows. However, we have yet to fully grasp the implications of...

An LLM "creates textual claims, and then predicts the citations that might be associated with similar text. Obviously, this practice violates all norms of scholarly citation.

At best, LLMs gesticulate toward the shoulders of giants."

Bender, West, and I contributed to this pro/con piece in PNAS.

Makes perfect sense to discontinue medical research right after a global pandemic that killed millions. This is the kind of strategic thinking we need!

I think this is one of my favourite colourful climate chart type things, because it depicts two things at once:

- Things are going to get worse, no matter what

- The degree to which they get worse depends on decisions made today

Meta’s shift to β€˜community notes’ risks hurting online health info providers more than ever Between allowing more β€œfree speech” and removing official fact-checking, Meta’s platforms risk becoming more hostile to public health organisations.

Worried about how Meta's new moderation policies will impact online sexual and reproductive health promotion? So am I! This piece is co-authored with my expert colleague & HDR student Joanna Williams: theconversation.com/metas-shift-...

Colleagues at ECCC are forecasting 1.45 Β± 0.10Β°C above pre-industrial levels for 2025, slightly cooler than the record high temperature of 1.55Β°C of 2024 but virtually certain to be hotter than every year on record prior to 2023 #climatechange

Leaked Meta Rules: Users Are Free to Post β€œMexican Immigrants Are Trash!” or β€œTrans People Are Immoral” Facebook now allows attacks on immigrants and trans people, and posts like β€œMexican immigrants are trash!” and β€œI’m a proud racist.”

NEW: I've obtained internal Meta docs revealing an array of sample posts that are now allowed under new hate speech rules. Examples include calling children "trannies," β€œJews are flat out greedier than Christians," and β€œimmigrants are grubby, filthy pieces of shit”

OpenAI doesn't report a single number for its climate impacts - not anywhere, in any way, shape or form.

It sounds kind of obvious but the fact that a company with such incredible electricity hunger isn't disclosing basic information about its energy consumption and associated emissions is v bad..

I know you have seen dogs playing poker, but have you seen cats winning at it?

Google has.

Still can't believe this is production technology from the unrivaled leader in internet search.

(Kitty Kuo is a human professional poker player)
