Bill Morrison's documentary Dawson City: Frozen Time is a great detective story on many levels and in many domains, regarding the survival of films and what they show (as Chris Marker said, you never know what you're filming); at @ifccenter.bsky.social at 6:55pmΒ +Q.&A. w/Morrison...:

review of Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
My BFI Film on Film Programme Notes: βWhateverβs inside making me what I am, itβs like film. Film only works inthe dark. Tear it all open and let in the light and you kill itβ β James Dean In October ...
70 years today since James Dean left the planet, much too young.
Rebel Without a Cause changed my life, and I even knew that was the case when I was first watching it on repeat at thirteen years old.
Here's some writing on the film for @letterboxd.social:

If this monstrosity ever gets built, it's where their Nuremberg trials should be held before we put them in jail & tear it down.

If I ever saw either one of my sons doing this to a woman, for ANY reasonβlet alone because she's frantic with worryβfirst I would disown him. And then I'd walk into the sea because nothing else I do could make up for that kind of maternal failure.

Pleased to have contributed to this @criterion.bsky.social @criterionchannl.bsky.social piece about some lesser-loved Robert Altman films. My pick: his attempt at lampooning the fashion industry, Pret-a-Porter.

I love her sultry, cunning peasant gaze in The Leopard, but seeing her this year in La Ragazza di Bube as a fearsome partisan fighter's woman, by turns defiant and petulant and tragic, it became an instant favourite. She was a total force of nature.

Can't believe I'm writing another post like this: RIP to a cinema giant. Claudia Cardinale was maybe the most beautiful woman in film history, but more, her unforgettable feline presence graces some of the greatest movies of all time, from Visconti to Leone to Comencini. :(

Robert Redford: act natural
In charismatic performances of immense restraint over more than half a century, Robert Redford blended traditionalism, predictability and inscrutability to great effect. From our January 2019 issue.
It's really interesting to read this 2019 piece back, where I address some of the critiques of Redford. Especially because I love him so dearly, I tried to be frank about his creative flaws & why they sometimes worked to his advantage (and sometimes did not!) www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-so...
