Some Beautiful winter views of European Capital cities, thanks to Sentinel-2!

I work at the European Space Agency as the mission scientist for the Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 next generation missions. I mainly post nice pictures of the Earth from space! Note: Not an official ESA account, opinions are my own and mine alone!

We have some technical limits on this (thermal and electrical) so it's not possible to do systematic night acquisitions with the current generation unfortunately.
For next gen, I aim to have some night capabilities - but not as frequent / comprehensive as the daytime imaging.
In December, we ran a campaign to switch the Sentinel-2A satellite on at night over some specific areas.
The goal was to provide data to help me work out how useful night imaging capabilities would be for next gen Sentinel-2...and the results are wonderful!

Small update to say that the mission performance centre are investigating this - will report back when I have any news :)
12.01.2026 08:42 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Kinda shocked at how the Netherlands copes with a little bit of snow.
Every train cancelled, roads not clear, people "stocking up on supplies in case shops close".
But, tbh, im glad to know its not just the UK that cant handle winter weather. I thought blighty was the exception ๐
Interesting, thanks. My municipality (Voorschoten) obviously sucks when it comes to snow machines ๐
05.01.2026 16:18 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Yes, exactly- this is my point. Cars prioritised and inadequate services for bikes and public transport. Is disappointing compared to other similar countries.
05.01.2026 11:04 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I must say I was disappointed! Expected the Dutch authorities to clear the cycle lanes, but they only cleared / gritted the car lanes - cycle lanes filled with slushy snow and ice.
05.01.2026 09:41 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 0Good idea! I'll try to do one after Christmas...but may need a reminder ;-)
Hope you have a good break too!
The traditional end of year collab between @esa.int , @eumetsat.int, @wmo-global.bsky.social and me.
I love making these pics...MTGsending back beautiful data as always! ๐
These four are 06UTC on: 19/12, 22/09, 21/06 and 20/03
Nice seeing how the sunlight moves around our planet during the year.
Yes indeed, which is why I'm confused! But it looks very much like an artefact related to the atmospheric correction and the scene geometry (most likely solar zenith angle). Maybe some numerical precision thing? Will be easier to tell when I see the data :)
17.12.2025 20:16 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0@kosmi.bsky.social could you provide a link to the L2A scene on the brower, including whatever band division you did to highlight the artefacts?
I will forward it to the data quality team and get their feedback.
I would say the opposite! :)
My first guess would be that this is an artefact introduced by the atmospheric correction, most likely tie points in the lookup tables.
I do both of these things many times each week. It's not a problem.
10.11.2025 10:59 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Huge dust storms in Pakistan, seen by the @esa.int / @ec.europa.eu Sentinel-2B and Sentinel-3B satellites on 4th November.
Neither satellite was designed to monitor dust plumes, so it's impressive how much information they give us about the detail and extent of these storms!

04.11.2025 21:06 โ ๐ 250 ๐ 57 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 8Along the N. Coast of Alaska, winter is closing in. These pics ages, from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, were taken just two weeks apart. Heavy snowfall on land, and the beginnings of ice on sea.
Soon, the sun will be too low and Sentinel-2 will stop acquiring images until Springtime.
Yeah, L1C also has the artifacts - caused by differing detector geometry. Only the L1b can fix it.
very niche so doesnโt make too much difference though, just bugs the perfectionist in me!
Really great that the imagery is on the browser so quickly. Will be super useful for the disaster response.
Looks good - but unfortunately the browser introduces some artefacts as it's using the L2 data.
28.10.2025 20:42 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Insane.
This is Hurricane #Melissa seen right near landfall by the Copernicus / @esa.int Sentinel-2C satellite.
It looks so beautiful, and it's hard to comprehend how much destruction a hurricane like this can cause.
Best wishes to everyone in Jamaica.
17 hours of #Hurricane #Melissa seen from space compressed into 9 seconds.
Weather sats are vital for monitoring and forecasting Hurricanes. Without them, our forecasts would be much worse - increasing the danger posed by these monsterous storms.

It was great to be at @thalesaleniaspace.bsky.social last week to discuss the SIRIUS mission that is under consolidation as one of @esa.int's future SCOUT missions.
SIRIUS will examine land surface temperature, with a focus on urban heat islands and unique data for evapotranspiration models.
Here are two images from the @esa.int / @ec.europa.eu Sentinel-2 mission showing the city of #Salalah in Southern Oman.
One pic from June, before the rainy season, and one from this week, after the rains. The hills around the city transform into a lush green landscape!
An amazing change in the colour of the sea due to #Typhoon #Ragusa.
The first pic was taken by the @esa_earth Sentinel-2 mission a few days before the typhoon, the second pic taken after the typhoon, just a few hours ago.
Nice to receive a little present from our @esa.int Sentinel-2 team, a Lego S2 satellite ๐
05.09.2025 08:34 โ ๐ 25 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Delighted to see that the next Meteosat satellite will launch on a European rocket.
MTG-I2 will complete the imaging constellation for Europe's next generation weather satellites, providing vital warnings for severe weather, wildfires, and more.
Am taking some time for relaxation in the Alps, so apologies for being slow to respond to messages and comments.
Will be back in the world of space-based Earth Observation soon, but for now im enjoying EO at slightly lower altitudes ๐
Congrats to my friends + colleagues across @esa.int , @eumetsat.int and @ec.europa.eu.
MetOp-SG is exciting, a big leap forward for weather prediction.
I think the key thing will be watching how scientists combine data from the different instruments to understand our planet. Lots of potential ๐
