The great figures that made history central to intellectual life are passing away. Sad to see Pierre Nora is the latest.

Don't forget the Annares/Uras comparison in The Dispossessed. Annares tries to compute real social value without a universal equivalent. Something similar envisaged in Red Plenty (but that uses shadow pricing. Is that money by another name?)
I know of a lot of work in creative practice research and in my own domain in history that has been very worried about the extractive possibilities of digital platforms. Have a look at this pacesetters.eu

There are enormous opportunities for democratic states with strong protections for academic freedom worldwide to collaborate in a new research alliance. This opportunity extends far beyond the obvious openings in applied and innovation research. Core values thrive in intellectual collaboration.
History is speeding up. Ireland being part of an effort to replace the dollar as the reserve currency is extraordinary. The Taoiseach may have some awkward moments in the White House.
Canada has a big opportunity to be central in planning the next Framework for EU R&D. It is already an associate in Horizon. Let’s have Canadian universities in the EUA.
If the ECB had been able to do this in 2008 we would be living in a better world.
When I worked in UK academia I recall hearing of a Japanese man who was baffled at how Britain had decided to run its universities like firms. “Why? Your universities are excellent and your firms are terrible.”
The world is in peril, but spring will come. Crocuses and a sunny February day here in Dundee
Niall I agree with you in principle, but we (Ireland) have to be serious about sovereignty (passports, alliances , defence etc) to be taken seriously. Constructive ambiguity around our relationships with UK and US while a member of EU while pushing a non aligned line in the UN is not viable.
Canada is already involved in Horizon Europe research. ised-isde.canada.ca/site/ised/en...
Not sure that “West” is still meaningful. Can the EU exert some kind of independent line in Israel? Would the UK support something that did not support the US? There has to be a viable political path to make something of the moral position.
