I am so honored and humbled to learn that not only did my drawing “Jazmyn” 9 x 12 graphite on Strathmore 300 Bristol Smooth paper win third place but also won the “People’s Choice” Award.

Here is a very small update on my self portrait “Pain” 9 x 12 graphite on 300 Bristol Smooth paper. I’m now adding detail as I observe the hills and valleys of the skin.

I managed to get my eyelid done. I used 6H, 4H, and 2H pencils initially to layer some graphite down. Then I used a kneaded eraser that I pinched to a point to pick out the highlighted areas.

I’m slowly building up the values, tones, and texture of my skin on my nose. I don’t use any blending tools. I love to create texture of skin by slowly layering my graphite.

I thought I would share a work in progress of my self portrait.

I call this “Pain” it’s 9 x 12 on Strathmore 300 Bristol Smooth paper.

My focus and inspiration with this piece is emotion, light, and shadow.
