We all need to Stand Up, and it only takes a few minutes a day! Keep up the pressure everyday!

If you're a US-based scientist but have not been to a @standupforscience.bsky.social rally or contacted your lawmakers or otherwise defended science then please read this blog post.

We need to defend science, not for our own self-interest/funding, but because its many gifts belong to society.

Two construction cranes crossed like red and green lightsabers on top of the new CHOP hospital building going up next to Penn Medicine, early morning with a grey sky and the building windows all lit up

My quote of the day

In the end, we know what makes us happy. We also know what makes us unhappy. That's the irony. We know and yet we still mess it up. That's part of the human condition, no, and why we need to work on it.

Success in this business brings a certain freedom that comes with responsibility to support each other, to lift others up when we can, to keep the door open for the next kid, the next lost boy who's looking for a place to belong. I'm indeed a lucky guy. Lucky to have found my people, lucky to have work that challenges me, lucky to still be doing it. And I don't take that for granted.

An entire group of American Citizens who are having their identity erased. This is not ok! This was never about immigrants or the worst of the worst.

In addition to this, a doctor was allowed to refuse prenatal care because a woman was not married and this was against his religion! I am terrified for my teenage daughter and this anti-woman country.

They beat a blind refugee who speaks no English for failing to obey police commands he could not understand. Then instead of apologizing, they charged him with possession of a “weapon”—HIS WALKING STICK. Then they dumped him miles from home without notifying anyone, after which he was found dead.

Q: You know who these tariffs are really hurting?

A: Scientists.

The extra prices being passed onto us means that we, who are already suffering horrible mismanagement from the Executive Branch cannot now purchase equipment necessary for work.

I hope all can read the gift article. This article hits on everything, the trust bonds that are being broken (at all levels, within teams, between teams and research participants, with institutions, the whole system) and the guilt associated with not being able to save your own research teams.

We should all read this. And most importantly remember how grossly incompetent and ill prepared our leaders truly are. We need to believe in ourselves!

They came to Massachusetts to cure disease. Now they’re packing up their labs. - The Boston Globe In a first-of-its-kind survey, the Globe asked hundreds of scientists about the impact of federal funding cuts.

The Globe spoke with more than two dozen of the respondents who said the cuts and policy changes had taken an incalculable toll on their professional and personal lives. Several expressed anguish over whether they would be able to continue their life’s work...” www.bostonglobe.com/2026/02/09/m...

A woman was rejected from a job because she had "people-pleasing tendencies." This is just a sexist criticism that women can't win. Women are expected to both please people and to not please people.

Another taxpayer funded vanity project so that people will bring a bring a trump card to the pharmacy instead of one from the drug company to get a discount all these pharmaceuticals already offer.

We asked whether principal investigators have plans in place for how research can continue without them Researchers must be mindful of unexpected events that may leave them incapacitated or unable to lead their research projects or labs.

So the question here is mis-specified. There is no "alternative" research funding in any way that would make American biomedical research whole for researchers to seek out. 1/ www.statnews.com/2026/02/03/p... via @statnews.com
