We live in one of the most unequal societies in the developed world.

Counting votes fairly would change that.

The โ€œoverdiagnosisโ€ debate also distracts from a harder reality in SEND:

the children, young people, carers and families who most need SEND provision are often the least likely to get it.

Poorest have got poorer under Labour while richest are better off Prime minister Keir Starmer pledges to โ€˜wage all out warโ€™ on the high cost of living

Shocking but unsurprising: "Amount poorest households have left over after bills & essential spending has fallen by 2.1% since Labour came to power. The most affluent households have seen their discretionary incomes rise by 10.3%"

The voice of the nation โ€“ who speaks for Britain? The wrong people are telling the story of Britain, and the story they tell is exhausted

I explore this argument in full here:

Thatโ€™s why sortition matters โ€” bringing together citizens, selected by lottery, to deliberate on major issues. Not a technocratic fix, but a redistribution of narrative power, where legitimacy grows from collective authorship rather than being spoken for.

14.12.2025 15:38 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

As @policypress.bsky.social #UncomfortablyOff shows, the top 10% donโ€™t just earn more โ€” they shape what counts as โ€œnormalโ€, โ€œfairโ€, or โ€œsqueezedโ€. Fear of downward mobility drives a cautious, defensive politics that manages decline rather than imagines change.

14.12.2025 15:38 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

They still rely on the moral story of meritocracy: work hard, be sensible, and stability follows. But that story has broken. Employment no longer guarantees security, public services have eroded, and inequality now flows far more from wealth than wages.

14.12.2025 15:38 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

That gap shows up in how political research is read. A recent Guardian article about the views of a focus group of relatively well-off voters described feeling squeezed โ€” and their voices still shape the national story because they mirror the people already overrepresented in politics and media.

Listening to @rogerhallam.com and Ash Sarkar @novaramedia.com sharpened something Iโ€™ve been thinking about for a while. Britainโ€™s democratic problem starts before the ballot box โ€” its in our failure to update the story of who counts, who contributes, or who gets to speak. @zackpolanski.bsky.social

georgemonbiot.bsky.social knows that journalism โ€œspeaks with the voice of powerโ€ which is why bylinestimes.bsky.social matters.

In my latest piece, I ask: if even high earners feel cut off from politics, whose voices are treated as speaking for Britain?

That is it.

And one day he will be made to answer for his role in drowning Gaza in oceans of blood.
