My advice to students, find people you enjoy working with and can do things you cant (i.e programmer, design, art etc) and start your own business and deliver a professional product ASAP.

Do this before you graduate and if you're lucky it's somewhat successful to help fund the next project.

Maybe 5-8 years ago you could do a Uni project or 2 with a high grade at Uni, or have a half working game to show in the recruiting stage to get close to being hired.

Because of last few years of mass redundancies you will be competing with people that have multiple projects released professionally

Candid advice to entry level game developers.

Unless you started and personally funded your own game studio for 5+ years and release a game you will 99.9% get rejected.

Recruiters talking nonsense to students are just there to take money for attending and say some fluff that won't reflect reality.

Finally completed Cairn, definitely one of the best games I have ever played in the last 15 years.

It will absolutely win awards at this year's game awards.
