Excited to share new work on how the brain makes social inferences from visual input! π§ π―ββοΈ

I highly recommend working with Emma, she is amazing! So kind and so brilliant.
If you're interested in studying conversation, there is no one better.

New preprint from Lindsey Tepfer (@ltjaql.bsky.social) and me! We silenced portions of internal monologues in two films to manipulate participants' access to characters' thoughts. Using ISC and RSA, we found that this aligned later neural processing of the narrative & encoding of trait impressions.
Just a human here π Writing this with my actual handsβno AI involved β¨
Key takeaways:
- Authenticity matters
- Connection is key
- I have real emotions
At the end of the day, genuine expression is what sets us apart π«Ά Thoughts? π
Giving what we can has implemented a fun game where you spin a globe to see how your starting point in life would compare if you were reborn today, randomly somewhere on earth.

Frog & Toad is out with this shirt in the wake of this weekendβs tragedy at Brown, an homage to the Mad Peck & the spirit of Providence.
Congrats Alex!!!!
π§ Β New paper alert! Can people infer othersβ values not from what they choose, but simply from what comes to mind? Across four studies, we show they canβdrawing on an intuitive theory of how options are generated.

sososo well deserved!! love your insta posts :-) congrats lindsay!!
I will be recruiting πPhD studentsπ for my newish lab! If you're interested in learning & memory mechanisms applied to individual, interactive & collective behavior using computational modeling, real-world experiments and fMRI, email me! RTs much appreciated π rouhanilab.com
We're excited to announce that Cognitive Science at Dartmouth is recruiting PhD students to work collaboratively with me, Steven Frankland, and Fred Callaway. Come study the principles and mechanisms that enable us to understand, plan, and act in the world! Info: sites.dartmouth.edu/cogscigrad/
π’ Thrilled to share our paper is out now in @natcomms.nature.com
Shared computations underlie how we acquire actions that are mutually beneficial, instrumentally harmful (benefits self at the expense of others), altruistic (benefit others at the expense of self), or mutually costly

Many psychiatric symptoms are inherently social. @xiaosigu.bsky.social, @joebarnby.com, & I call for cognitive models that reflect processes most relevant to our questions, esp. for those about social symptomsπ§΅
I'm recruiting grad students!! π
The CoDec Lab @ NYU (codec-lab.github.io) is looking for PhD students (Fall 2026) interested in computational approaches to social cognition & problem solving π§
Applications through Psych (tinyurl.com/nyucp) are due Dec 1. Reach out with Qs & please repost! π

I'm happy to now be able to share a talk I gave at TEDx New England last Fall!Β
The talk is about our lab's work on what makes decisions costly, and how to make them less so.
I discuss lessons for all kinds of decisions, including getting people to vote.

New Open dataset alert:
π§ Introducing "Spacetop" β a massive multimodal fMRI dataset that bridges naturalistic and experimental neuroscience!
N = 101 x 6 hours each = 606 functional iso-hours combining movies, pain, faces, theory-of-mind and other cognitive tasks!

I'll be reviewing computational/cognitive and clinical psychology applications this year for the Translational Lab at Emory ππ¬
Please share broadly and send applicants my way! π

I emailed them yesterday and they said they're updating it to "reflect new guidelines." Also mentioned that the deadline would likely be pushed back for this cycle
We are looking for a research assistant/lab manager to join the lab! A supportive, collaborative environment where you can learn neural recording with Neuropixels, optogenetics, fiber photometry, and neural data analysis.
