A tiny hummingbird perches on a thin branch in a tropical forest. Its body appears deep black in the shade, with a slender straight bill pointing forward. Rising from the top of its head is a narrow, upright crest that gleams turquoise, green, and blue, like a small mohawk. The bird sits alert and upright. Soft green leaves blur in the background, suggesting dense vegetation. Species and behavior: Antillean crested hummingbird (Orthorhyncus cristatus) This is a male Antillean crested hummingbird, native to the Caribbean. Males are instantly recognizable by their tall iridescent crest; females lack it entirely. The crest is erectile. It can lie flat and nearly disappear, then rise dramatically during courtship or territorial displays, allowing the bird to change its appearance instantly. Despite its tiny size, this species is highly aggressive. Males fiercely defend nectar sources and will chase off larger birds, insects, and rival hummingbirds. The brilliant crest color comes from structural iridescence, not pigment. The feathers reflect light at specific angles, so the crest can appear dull in shade and suddenly flash electric blue-green when the bird turns its head. Like all hummingbirds, it has an extreme metabolism. Its wings beat roughly 50–70 times per second, and its heart rate can exceed 1,000 beats per minute. To conserve energy at night, it enters torpor, lowering body temperature and metabolism until morning. The Antillean crested hummingbird is one of the very few hummingbird species with a true upright crest, making it one of the Caribbean’s most distinctive and charismatic birds.
