“I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.”

A quote from Martin Luther King, Jr. that I wanted to share today. Optimism is hard some days, but this reflects a belief I share

Almost all of us are the descendants of immigrants who fled persecution, or were brought to America under duress, or sought better lives for themselves and their descendants.

Politicians who stoke fear and hatred over immigration want you to forget this.

Do not.

'Biological reality': What genetics has taught us about race As US President Donald Trump takes aim at the Smithsonian Institution for "anti-American ideology", Adam Rutherford examines what the science of genetics has taught us about race.

“The concept of race has little utility as a biological taxonomy. But it is enormously important socially & culturally. Social constructs are how the world works: money & time are both socially constructed too.” - @adamrutherford.bsky.social

There is no such thing as public health without health equity. Equity is the part of public health that makes it, well, public! It’s a core value. Very disappointed in my Alma Mater here. And as we’ve seen countless times, these concessions do nothing to prevent being targeted by this administration

I don’t know what’s more disheartening—the administration cutting DEI and science funding or how quickly institutions and researchers erase any mention of diversity and equity from their materials.

Completely agree. The fact that people are contemplating hiding their DEI efforts is so heartbreaking and damaging.

I leaked out of the scientific pipeline 20 years ago and returned 5 years ago, dismayed to find the same barriers for mothers and marginalized folks. Now, under the guise of efficiency, the US scientific system is set to become even harsher—I’m incredibly discouraged but trying not to give up.

Holding It Together by Jessica Calarco: 9780593538128 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: Books Other countries have social safety nets. The U.S. has women. Holding It Together chronicles the causes and dire consequences. America runs on women—women who are tasked with holding society...

This is why capitalism and patriarchy go hand-in-hand.

And why "Lean In" only works for privileged women who can afford to outsource most or all of their caregiving labor, pushing it onto other women--often women of color--more vulnerable than them.

WSJ Article
They share an office with one big desk and one telephone. They often eat three meals a day together, and take all their meetings as a pair.

Matt Perelman and Alex Sloane, lifelong friends, built Garnett Station, a private-equity firm that is drawing high-profile investors and a portfolio of regional restaurants that recently surpassed $1 billion in annual sales.

The celebration of "hardcore" work culture is keeping us from gender equality.

If men can only be "successful" by working so much they're eating every meal at the office, then they have incentive to avoid any care work that might pull them away. Which means pushing all the care onto women instead.
