The last Zoom event in our Winter Season will take place online on Thursday 5th March, 2026 from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. The topic is 'Digital Norman'.
We will look at how much information about Norman Nicholson is available online and what that tells us about his current reputation. It will be fun!
We have 60 attendees for this Celebration. A record so far! Next year, 2027, why don't you join in and see what all the fuss is about!
All are welcome to register for the FREE online Norman Nicholson Birthday Celebration on January 8th 2026 from 7.30-9.00pm - but the deadline for registering is Wednesday 7th January at 5.00pm. Drop an email to normannicholsonsociety@gmail.com if you'd like to attend. See: www.normannicholson.org

Someone put this into Modern English. Who? They should also be acknowledged. William Langland's words would be hard for a contemporary audience to understand without the help of a form of translation. Give visibility to the translator!
A great poet!
A book highly recommended by the Norman Nicholson Society too! Well done, Ishita, for your sensitive review. Nicholson, recipient of the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry and a Faber poet, published by TS Eliot, would have approved! π
It's great to see someone interacting so sensitively and intelligently with contemporary poet. Cumbrian poet Norman Nicholson (1914-1987), who regularly reviewed for the TLS, would have approved!π
Thanks for those poems! A good crop...
Antoinette Fawcett, Editor of Comet, the Norman Nicholson Society's magazine, will be teaching a course on Poetry and Translation at the wonderful Higham Hall from December 7th to December 9th: highamhall.com/course/poetr...
Fantastic news, Ilse! Well done and well deserved...
A beautiful poem and a beautiful door! Thank you!
That sounds great! Where do you teach your poetry class?
Thank you, Hannah.
Let the Wealthy & Great
Roll in Splendor & State
I envy them not I declare it
I eat my own Lamb
My own Chicken & Ham
I shear my own Fleece & I wear it
I have Lawns I have Bowers
I have Fruits I have Flowers
The Lark is my morning alarmer...

We at The Norman Nicholson Society enjoy reading your critical pieces, Jeremy. And thanks for the free goodies on your Substack too!
Thank you very much, Hannah. It's fantastic that you've taken the trouble to bring together UK poets in this way.
The Starter Pack UK Poets Lists are really useful! Thank you!
Can you also include some Dead Good Poets (and their Literary Societies)?
See the Alliance of Literary Societies website for details of societies that work to celebrate the poems and prose of their writers and poets: allianceofliterarysocieties.wordpress.com
Thanks, Ian. I will let Kathleen know.
The Norman Nicholson Society highly recommends Alison Brackenbury's 'Village'. Alison and Norman were kindred spirits - Alison's first collection of poems, 'Dreams of Power', came out in 1981, the same year that Nicholson's last collection 'Sea to the West' was published!

There's an exciting exhibition at Wordsworth Grasmere, inspired by the Wordsworths trips to South Cumbria, and it also references the work of Norman Nicholson. 'Sparkling Waters of Morecambe Bay' by Kate Tame is a beautiful example of this. See our website for full details: www.normannicholson.org
