For 2012, the Houston Film Critics Society recognized Robert Duvall with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
I created this montage in his honor.
Featuring a few of his iconic lines and shots from memorable films and ending with screen debut.
Rest in peace.

‘CRIME 101’ Review: This is Not a Re-HEAT, though some might call it Highway Robbery – Fresh Fiction

Having read the @donwinslow.bsky.social novella I am looking forward to Chris Hemsworth as the "101 Bandit" in a film that asks the question WWSMD?
What Would Steve McQueen Do?

First time seeing the film performed with a live orchestra. Very cool.
Forget LOVE ACTUALLY. Nothing says Christmas like seeing Mads Mikkelsen seek vengeance in @magnoliapics.bsky.social RIDERS OF JUSTICE.
The Houston Film Critics Society will be presenting this revenge thriller tomorrow night.
It's going to be MADS ACTUALLY.

@rianjohnson.bsky.social WAKE UP DEAD MAN is a divine investigation. Naughty things in the nave with a fickle flock. This third KNIVES OUT mystery is less cozy but is as locked in as ever. Benoit Blanc may not be moved by religion, he's the proper proselyte to solve a monsignor's murder.
A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE makes its arrival to 4K UHD this week from @criterion.bsky.social I don't think enough people talk about it. It has the beats of a straightforward thriller but with commentary about confrontation.
It also marked a David Cronenberg renaissance with Viggo Mortensen as the star.
For VIDEOHEAVEN Alex Ross Perry should have acknowledged that just as David Cronenberg helped usher videotape in film with VIDEODROME, his 2005 film A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE was the last major Hollywood movie released on VHS.
I can't believe @kimmorgan.bsky.social convinced @realgdt.bsky.social to use The Edgar Winter Group's "Frankenstein" over the end credits.
Brilliant.
Locked in. That's Paul Thomas Anderson's ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER.
Viva la revolution!
My take on why box office matters, but why movies matter more.
Listening to @scottmendelson.bsky.social on THE TOWN recently helped spur this column.

Fun little nods in CAUGHT STEALING.
1. Takes place in New York, 1998 (the same place and year Aronofsky's debut PI was released).
2. Signage for Kim's Video was recreated for an exterior shot on Avenue A.
3. Including Griffin Dunne in the cast 40 years after AFTER HOURS.
Thank you @appletves.bsky.social and Sal Saperstein!

Friedkin, Fritz, and fatalism.
I take a look at two new entries from @criterion.bsky.social SORCERER and THE BIG HEAT.

This is me with Kindle ebook purchases I make for $1.99 ea.
I think I might have less than 10 digital movie purchases.
Heck, I don't even redeem the codes I get with physical media and I'm too lazy to barter them.
EDDINGTON: The most COVID of COVID movies.
This coming from a guy that saw it in an auditorium with like five other people, all of whom were at least six feet away from me.
Too bad mainstream media is concentrating on the politics of SUPERMAN and not what Ari Aster captures in his anti-western.
The problem with JAWS is that it was so damn good that the inferior sequels has made @universalstudiosfl.bsky.social not resurrect the franchise.
But what if... We have OPPENHEIMER. The ship to transport the bombs was the USS Indianapolis.
We need the story of the ship and the sharks.
While we will have likely ingested more content on cable and physical media versus theatrical, streaming first/only can never match the cultural relevance that theatrical first brings.
But, I also think streaming is more advantageous for prestige television than local/basic cable.
When do we get the Gosling/Powell "Guys II Men" project?
Gosling: Nice Guy / Fall Guy
Powell: Hangman / Hit Man / Running Man
For real.
After being stuck in Chicago for the better part of a week (ugh), I finally got the @secondsightfilms.bsky.social release of THE NICE GUYS.
I'm not one to usually complain about shipping, but packing this box for overseas shipment to Texas should have been better than in a case mailer.
Face it, Daniel. You are both Louis and Melanie. Can't locate your car in a parking lot, and you watch TV and get high.
Yeah, it's a shame ORCA was the bigger hit. This had major potential. Too bad it didn't catch on with general audiences.
SAY CHEESE
For Barf recasting (if the character is in it at all) call him The Mogdalorian.
No mention of five PLANET OF THE APES movies? Oh shit, there goes the sequel.
How could Mel Brooks leave out that there's been five PLANET OF THE APES movies since SPACEBALLS with the SPACEBALLS 2 announcement?
