The book makes it eminently clear that after about 1934, the chances of grassroots resistance toppling the Nazi regime were realistically speaking zero.

Not to say resistance was unimportant: even the Nazis were forced to alter many of their policies due to the people opposing them together.

One of the reasons I believe a realistic situational picture is important is because it tells *these current bozos can be beaten.*

For the most part, they aren't even close to achieving the kind of totalitarian control and crushing of the opposition Nazis were able to establish in just few years.

Nevertheless, I also think it is important to evaluate the situation and the threat realistically.

I'd guesstimate that if what Nazi Germany in the mid to late 1930s was 10, on a scale of 1 to 10, what is going on in the US right now for example is maybe 3-4.

I have to note that while what Orban, Trump, and other wannabe tinpot dictators & their sycophantic retinues have been doing is *at the very least* proto-fascism, it is still mild compared to the totalitarian takeover the Nazis did in just few years in the 1930s.

My very dear partner gave me Evans's "The Third Reich in Power: How the Nazis won over the hearts and minds of a nation" as a wedding anniversary present (yes, this was a very romantic gesture!) and I've been reading it a lot recently.

MUCH RECOMMENDED. Very clear parallels to the present.

But compared to the situation Germans found themselves in the latter part of the 1930s, we in Western democracies have so. much. power.

So use it! Don't fall into the trap of despair!
