Fantastic stuff. Amazing thing, evolution - especially when you can see how species like this have come to fit their environment so well 😹

A close-up of deeply furrowed Canary Island pine bark showing dark, charred outer plates split open to show smoother, lighter wood inside, with patches of orange-brown exposed where the fire has burned through. The trunk of a Canary Island pine in a dry, open woodland, with blackened, cracked bark from a past fire and several tufts of bright green needle regrowth sprouting directly from the scorched trunk, surrounded by other pines and a forest floor of dry needles and rocks.

These pines, which are native to the Canary Islands, are quite remarkable - they are some of the most fire-resistant conifers in the world. They can even resprout after losing their needles in a fire. I was amazed to see extensive fire damage to trees but they were still very much alive! 2/2

A tall Canary Island pine with long, pale-green needles stands on dark volcanic lava rock near Chinyero Volcano on Tenerife. Other pines grow in the distance across the rugged lava field under a clear blue sky. 🌲

As there are still no leaves on the trees and I do admit to enjoying a bit of colour, here’s a rather fetching Canary Island pine. I was very taken with the forests on Tenerife and amazed to see how fire-resistant they are (see pics below) 1/2 #ThickTrunkTuesday

I had a Blue Tit in real life this morning - first on the feeder and then on the manky old apple that’s been hanging far too long but it’s only now that they seem to be noticing it - maybe it’s finally defrosted? 😹 #FirstBirdOfMyDay

Poland is blessed with sandy beaches all along its coast. Unfortunately on the Baltic, not the Med, but that doesn’t stop people from flocking there in July/Aug. In the towns beaches are packed but further along you can find quieter spots. Water temp around 20C & air temp usually 20-25 - pleasant.

It is, at all times of year, although I prefer it out of season of course! And at the moment there are lots of migratory birds so there’s added interest, especially when you watch the Mute Swans skidding over the ice trying to take off and land 😹

It is, especially out of high season and if you go earlier in the morning before most of the tourists get moving 😺 This weekend there were Mute Swans, Greylag Geese, Goldeneye, a Long-tailed Duck, and the usual Mallards, Black-Headed Gulls, Herring Gulls and Cormorants.

I think I’ll have to - it’s all looking a bit Gobi desert again!

Signs of life in early spring at the Baltic resort of Kołobrzeg as buds start opening on trees that are rooted in the protected sand dunes behind the beach. In the background are empty sands and the sea which has a lake-like calm. A joint pedestrian and cycling path that runs between the seaside resorts of Kołobrzeg and Ustronie Morskie. The path is lined by trees - on the left side these are part of a protected wetland, and on the right they help anchor the shifting dunes in place. In the foreground on the right there is a bench for people to stop and rest awhile. A European Robin sitting on a bare branch in scrubland at the Eastern Ecopark wetland in Kołobrzeg, Poland.

This is the season known as “przedwiośnie”, or pre-spring, as the ice slowly melts but new life has not truly woken yet. Migrating swans and geese are arriving though, and a local robin made a special appearance! 2/2 #Zachodniopomorskie #Kołobrzeg #Przedwiośnie

A long wooden boardwalk with white railings stretches straight ahead between a calm lagoon on the right and low dunes on the left, leading toward a tiny figure in the distance under a pale blue late-winter sky; leafless trees cast long shadows across the planks, and a red post with a yellow warning sign stands beside the sandy shore of Ekopark Wschodni in Kołobrzeg during the early spring “przedwiośnie” season. A quiet wetland scene in Ekopark Wschodni in Kołobrzeg during the early spring “przedwiośnie” season, showing still reflective water, still iced over in parts. Here and there are reed clumps and old tree stumps, framed by bare dark tree branches in the foreground and a low, hazy treeline against a bright, slightly overcast sky in the distance.

A fascinating part of the Polish Baltic resort of Kołobrzeg is the Ekopark Wschodni (Eastern Ecopark), a natural wetland area that protects a wide variety of birds. It’s just behind the sand dunes so you can see the sea on the left and the lake on the right. It’s a popular cycling route 1/2

A close-up of a circular cast-iron storm-drain manhole cover set in light grey stone paving in Kołobrzeg, Poland. The cover is divided into wedge-shaped panels with small raised squares and a central emblem resembling a stylised crown above waves. Around the centre is the Polish inscription “KANALIZACJA DESZCZOWA – KOŁOBRZEG” (rainwater drainage – Kołobrzeg). There are additional markings - “D400 KZO,” “EN124-2,” and “DO600,” which I imagine indicate technical standards. A wide seaside promenade in Kołobrzeg, Poland, paved with pale stone slabs and lined with benches and modern lampposts. A round manhole cover is visible in the foreground of the pavement. Several people are walking along the path while others are sitting on benches beside leafless trees. To the left there are modern white hotel buildings with glass balconies, and the scene is lit by clear early spring sunlight.

Had a very relaxing weekend at the seaside with some welcome sunshine and the chance to take long walks along the beautiful promenade in Kołobrzeg, where I happened upon this interesting find 😺 #ManholeCoverMonday

The beautiful weather continues and this morning’s #FirstBirdOfMyDay was a row of Sparrow lads lined up in front of the feeder. They’re particularly feisty at the moment 😹

🎼🎶‘Oh I do like to be beside the seaside…’🎶 and get woken up by the squawking of squabbling Herring Gulls at 6 in the morning! 😺#FirstBirdOfMyDay

Very atmospheric! Unsurprisingly here at the seaside the #FirstBirdOfMyDay was a couple of Herring Gulls squabbling over a snack 😺

A fascinating article which I will take full notice of when I finally get my summer house and plot going. Although, tbf, ‘low-intensity land management practices’ were probably always the intention! 👍😹

You’re very welcome, Chloe 😺 It’s these small things that are so important. We need to concentrate on them and make sure they’re there for future generations.

Yeah he’s been around a while now so I’m really hoping he’s successful. If there are any female Robins in the area they’ll hear him for sure!

Morning, Mushen! I always have the same feeling about Friday - am very happy to work on this day knowing that I have a free one ahead of me 😺 Even better when I know it’s going to be sunny! A trip to the seaside is in order, methinks 👍

Will do! At the moment it looks like they might die of drought - if it doesn’t rain soon I’ll have to start watering.
