Will workers ratify it?

This article says that Amazon must prove it did not violate the Charter by firing hundreds of workers for unionization.
Wrong. Amazon is a horrible company but it canβt violate the Charter.
The Charter governs governments not private corporations.

Teachers union challenging Albertaβs use of notwithstanding clause in back to work legislation that clearly violates freedom of association.
Itβs a tough argument to win but weβll see.

Great night at the @broadbent.bsky.social Gala tonight, here with @maritstilesndp.bsky.social, Mark Rowlinson from @gpllp.bsky.social and Don Eddy from @paliareroland.bsky.social.

As if pointing out facts is a crime.
We need more Canadian studies/surveys digging down into opinions of Canadians on unions and collective bargaining.
The data we have is dated. Where are our big survey folks?

13.11.2025 14:06 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0PS It was great as always to see you offline @eidlin.bsky.social (truly, you are always offering solid, empowering perspectives on labour and are the best dressed in the room! an icon!!) and it was amazing to meet you, @thelawofwork.bsky.social (and while I'm striking, at that!).
11.11.2025 17:48 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0I think the goal of the argument is to avoid Section 1 entirely. That is, there is not even a Section 2(d) breach as long as neutral arbitration is substituted.
11.11.2025 15:59 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Seems to me that is a very surprising read of SFL.
If that argument were accepted by courts then SFL would have the bizarre effect of abolishing the right to strike, since govts could just legislate arbitration whenever it suits them (ie whenever a strike would be effective).
Iβm noticing a trend in employer/employer counsel arguments about scope of constitutional right to strike in Canada.
Their argument is that the SCC didnβt actually recognize a βright to strikeβ in the SFL case.
Instead it recognized a right to neutral arbitration. Thus, govtβs can just impose arb.
Canβt say I enjoyed the full winter experience in Montreal this week, but was great to hang with Professors @eidlin.bsky.social and
Dalia Gesualdi-Fecteau and talk about labour law and other less work-y stuff.
The stupidification of Albertans continues under this nutty government.

In the wake of the Panama Papers scandal, Kevin O'Leary said he'd take his marbles and leave if Canada tried to reduce the tax shelters that protect the rich from paying their fair share.

I donβt even know any of the Rock songs or albums. Wow.

A worker who does real work (work that needs to be done) for a not-for-profit MAY also be an "employee", but that requires a more nuanced analysis. We want people to volunteer for charities.
But it's more straightforward for for-profit businesses.
Real Work + For-Profit Business = NOT Volunteer.
What is a "volunteer"?:
Papa Murphyβs v Manmeet Kaur, 2025 ABESAB 16 canlii.ca/t/kg7tv
For-profit pizza company claims worker was an unpaid volunteer. As if. Board finds "employment" relationship.
For me, if (1) worker does real work & (2) the business is for-profit, worker is not a "volunteer".
