There indeed is so much to fight for, and in some countries (looking at you, US), some old fights have become new fights.
One thing (academic) men can do is not participate in manels! It can be uncomfortable at times but it is also still necessary. Here’s my experience: 🧵
Presenting today at @tcru-ucl.bsky.social seminar on bringing back large families in child & family research. Looking forward to lively in-person discussions: 12 am @ucl.ac.uk

Are large families being overlooked in today’s social policy debates?
This Thursday's seminar explores why families with three or more children still matter, and how welfare systems shape their lives.

I argue that large families should be mainstreamed within child research & draw on our special issue on large families:

A new report has been published that analyses public #attitudes towards #inequality, inheritance and proposed taxes to reduce inequality.
The report analysed our panel #survey #data (CRONOS-3) and was produced as part of the Infra4NextGen project, funded by @ec.europa.eu 🇪🇺.
Interesting article about digital public policy and open data in local government practice
Lack of speed-limit data from Dublin City Council is hampering a “lifesaving” technology in cars. The council is now over 18 months late in meeting a legal deadline to publish a digital map of speed limits on city streets.
A must read. The most shocking for me is: 1) AI companies pay 'campus ambassadors' to undermine campus teaching itself. 2) students are encouraged to upload lectures to train AI. On the latter I might have to ban recordings allowed for access students.
I've said it before, but the first school that promotes itself as "AI-free" is going to corner the market on folks committed to learning. (gift link)
Irish fathers discover their kids??? No. It’s only 10 years since the State started to support new dads to take time off to care for their babies (now 11 weeks paid leave in baby’s first two years).
I’ve some words here on what’s and who is behind our improving division of work & care.
We welcome the Tánaiste’s reassurance that new laws will not make cycling without a helmet a crime.
While using helmets is important for cyclists, this law would have criminalised cyclists rather than users of high speed motorised bikes, scramblers and scooters, and dangerous drivers.

Where we're going we don't need cycle paths... and, sure, what do you want street lights for? Get some lights on your bike....
(...excuse the blooper reel audio...)
Bicycles do not require numberplates in Switzerland, even most e-bikes and cargo e-bikes don't
However, if your e-bike can go faster than 25km/h it is classed the same as a moped and must have a license plate...
...which is exactly the same as the law here in Ireland, only here it is not enforced.
Should we try this? Would it be enforced?
In France's Lot-et-Garonne area, drivers using a mobile phone while driving will face an immediate six-month licence suspension and a €135 fine, in addition to other penalties applied at the national level elsewhere. www.connexionfrance.com/practical/de...
No space for cycle paths in plan for street which is primary route in Dublin’s cycle network plan

The main issue here is that cyclist crossing a red light or not having lights on is a very visible violation of the law. As the report highlights, speeding violations and mobile phone use by drivers is largely invisible, but as prevalent. Still, this morning I also observed cars breaking red lights.
U16s are banned from e-scooters, so how can adding high-vis or helmets laws make them safer?

The 2025 National Security Strategy document makes it official: the Trump administration believes that European liberal democracy is a threat to U.S. national interest.
Congratulations to Paul Sweeney! The Honorary Doctorate was jointly proposed by econ & social policy @ucdspswsj.bsky.social as Paul's economic analyses and perspectives have direct welfare implications. Thanks to @natpolicy.bsky.social for highlighting these connections in his speech.
Delighted to receive an Honorary Doctorate in Economic Science from UCD for my “contributions to economics” and to “the distinctive Irish economic model.”
The decade at @ucddublin.bsky.social & @ucdspswsj.bsky.social is full. Thanks to all the wonderful colleagues I had the honor to work with and the students I taught and also learned from. Hard to believe how fast the time went & that live now longer in Dublin than in any other city in my life.
At least the motion is withdrawn for now. I still do not understand which green councillors on the committee voted for it. @donnacooney1.bsky.social & Ray Cunningham ? It seems also @greenpartyie.bsky.social lacks sufficient understanding of history & anti-semitic ideology.
I usually do not post on these issues, but which ethnicity/religion is next on the radical left radar? It is already hard enough with the radical right and the increasing anti-migrant and xenophobic sentiment.
