An excellent write up!! I'll add that these challenges are further amplified by international academics, esp from the global south, with the perpetual uncertainty of where "home" will be in the next few years and the lack of nearby family support that could potentially add optimism to plans πŸ₯²

A conceptual figure showing how population size decreases, and genetic drift increases along an environmental gradient to the point where adaptation is no longer possible (the expansion threshold)

A conceptual figure showing how population size decreases, and genetic drift increases along an environmental gradient to the point where adaptation is no longer possible (the expansion threshold)

Why do species have finite distributions? In this preprint we find genetic drift is stronger closer to range edges using open data from >37k individuals/ 59 species, meaning edgier populations might not have the adaptive capacity to expand their range. Check out our latest on killer whales in the Arctic! With lengthening ice-free seasons we are seeing more & more KWs in the Arctic. We found 2 pop's as genetically distinct as ecotypes found elsewhere use the region. KWs could bring significant ecosystem-level change to the rapidly changing Arctic

Visual summary of manuscript in Journal of Zoology examining what factors influence mammalian relative testes size

We, 3 female behavioral ecologists, decided it was high time we collate the BIGGEST database on mammal testes size (571 species!).

What factors influence relative testes size? Mainly mating system and litter rate.

In sum: SIZE IS NOT EVERYTHING!
