Many people claim to be against the death penalty in abstract. Few of them actually remain so when presented with a specific circumstance they care deeply about, because the death penalty isn't just a matter of punishment, but also giving the victim's loved ones some closure.

At no point did political violence become "understandable" after 2014. The only way a system of free and fair democracy can continue to function is if we agree political violence is a hard red line that can't be crossed. The more we normalize it, the more we contribute to its erosion.

You don't get to define what is "good and decent" anymore. Anytime you call out MAGA undermining the norms and values that held this republic together for so long, they'll be able to say you elected a man who wants to kill them and their kids. Not really, the FCC's comments about axing Kimmel are definitely a bad sign. The sudden concern among progressive liberals is not, however, coming from a genuinely principled belief in free speech itself, but from a cynical desire to cling to the institutional power they once held before 2022.

Progressive liberals once had so much institutional power that it led them to argue against the broader definition of free speech for years up until Trump 2. Now your arguments from that era of politics have been weaponized back at you, and you can't respond without looking incredibly hypocritical.

It doesn't matter how vehemently you disagreed with his politics. Kirk held no position in gov't. He was just a guy killed for engaging in open debate. If that doesn't outrage you, then you have no moral high ground. You can no longer claim to care about this Republic and what it stands for.

Most of Bluesky seems to be celebrating Charlie Kirk's death. All that feigned moral authority evaporated in an instant.

The people who are taking some kind of smug satisfaction out of Charlie Kirk's death should watch it. They should know exactly what they are celebrating.
