I know this is a controversial topic.. there’s ~20k US scientists who lost their jobs as well… the assumption of the usual discourse around paying reviewers is that people are compensated by their academic employment, but even in better times there are often funding gaps for early career scientists

thinking out loud… as an unemployed early career scientist I get a lot of review requests, all of which I turn down & let the editor know I need to dedicate my full energy to finding academic employment (beyond true!) BUT I keep thinking I would accept a fair number if it were an income stream… 🧪👩🏻‍🔬🧠

I got rejected on a 94.6% & looks like >97% is needed. Comments were minimal so I’m not sure there’s a clear takeaway other than ‘this year was super competitive’. Frustrating to sink so much time into #MSCA app, but I’m unemployed due to 🇺🇸💩 so must keep applying to grants & am trying to #chooseEU 😮‍💨
