You and @datacitron.bsky.social did a fantastic job. We could see the joy and passion you both have for the book and it was so fun seeing the behind the scenes.
And yes, all for not having to haul a heavy bag of books! π
Thank you @questionsindataviz.com for capturing such a fun moment! :D

Oh.......welp.
This week's #dataviz book was sent to me by a former MICA classmate and I can't be more excited. Not just for learning more about #inclusivedesign but because it is awesome to have found incredible people thru MICA, WID, and DVS and we're able to share and contribute to each other's journeys.
This is why they're attacking science and education: if you can only win with disinformation, data become a threat.
How much do you think exploratory vs explanatory factors into this?
Great answer! :) How do you choose which projects to talk about or show during interviews?
@datavizsociety.bsky.social's Mentorship Program is still looking for incredible people to join as mentors for our 8th cohort!
To be a mentor: your willingness to help another achieve their goals, be it learning a tool, making a #dataviz, or designing a portfolio.

Do you practice elevator pitches for specific projects? What details matter most?

This leads me to wonder about the MVP of portfolio projects. Early career folks share whatever they have, generally, and working professionals share their best works, which could have taken months to make. But what bare minimum requirements would side projects need to meet to go into a portfolio?
For careers like this, where it might be understood by the majority that portfolios are minimal to non-existent, how important are they in the hiring process? Do you feel you even need to put in the effort to create/maintain one?
I've remade my portfolio three times already, twice for exactly the reason you describe - frameworks get updated & it's just as easy to sit down & recreate it from scratch as to try untangling the chaos of errors & updates. I just remade it in wix cause ain't nobody got time for that anymore, haha.
Why every 5 years? And updating content, aesthetics, or both?
Re #Dataviz Portfolios, early career folks are mostly concerned with making and populating one, but what do non-early-career folks struggle with re: portfolios?
Once you have one, what's next? Maintaining and updating? Updating aesthetics? Remaking it to go from personal to business?
Last day to submit! The deadline is 11:59pm UTC or 3:59pm PST.
Kicking off our first data challenge collab of 2025 with @ajstarks.bsky.social's #DuBoisChallenge2025!
It's open to everyone and winners are chosen from the DVS slack channel #challenge-dubois so be sure to post what you make there each week.
Looking forward to seeing all the creations!!
@ifbookspod.bsky.social could you do Supercommunicators by Charles Duhigg?? The vibe I'm getting is, white man discovers the best ways to communicate and they're exactly what women have been doing all along.
All with your great support and feedback!!
Thank you!! π
Wouldn't have been possible without the amazing graphics team at SciAm, @jenchristiansen.com, @unamandita.bsky.social, and space feature editor @clarakm.bsky.social.
My 4-page π spread for the Feb issue of @sciam.bsky.social is now live in digital format! I take a look at everyone who has been to space or earned their astronaut wings.

While parts of LA are burning the sonification of LoudNubers comes to mind: they created a data sonification on the wildfires of Canada 2023. Eerie, disturbing and admirable piece. The data is sonified with different sounds and layers, narrated by a survivor.
