You and @datacitron.bsky.social did a fantastic job. We could see the joy and passion you both have for the book and it was so fun seeing the behind the scenes.

And yes, all for not having to haul a heavy bag of books! πŸ˜‚

Picture of a sentence, "Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusive standards have become established practice in global tech firms both when hiring and when developing new products." In light of recent governmental changes, this hits different.

Oh.......welp.

A boon laying on a wood table titled "Design for All? Inclusive Design Today", and a greeting card sent by my friend with the book.

This week's #dataviz book was sent to me by a former MICA classmate and I can't be more excited. Not just for learning more about #inclusivedesign but because it is awesome to have found incredible people thru MICA, WID, and DVS and we're able to share and contribute to each other's journeys.

Tweet from Scott Jennings, saying "um, yes, that's really a problem," with a quoted image saying "The problem with left-leaning media is they're intrinsically more strict with their propaganda to only using verifiable sources so it's really hard to poke holes in their ideology and arguments in comparison to a lot of low quality right-wing content. That makes attacking their points with fact checkers not very effective unless the fact checkers use misinformation tactics as well. In essence, people on the right have to work harder and more creatively to push their agendas as statistics and studies frustratingly aren't usually on our side."

This is why they're attacking science and education: if you can only win with disinformation, data become a threat.

How much do you think exploratory vs explanatory factors into this?

Great answer! :) How do you choose which projects to talk about or show during interviews?

This leads me to wonder about the MVP of portfolio projects. Early career folks share whatever they have, generally, and working professionals share their best works, which could have taken months to make. But what bare minimum requirements would side projects need to meet to go into a portfolio?

For careers like this, where it might be understood by the majority that portfolios are minimal to non-existent, how important are they in the hiring process? Do you feel you even need to put in the effort to create/maintain one?

I've remade my portfolio three times already, twice for exactly the reason you describe - frameworks get updated & it's just as easy to sit down & recreate it from scratch as to try untangling the chaos of errors & updates. I just remade it in wix cause ain't nobody got time for that anymore, haha.

Why every 5 years? And updating content, aesthetics, or both?

Re #Dataviz Portfolios, early career folks are mostly concerned with making and populating one, but what do non-early-career folks struggle with re: portfolios?

Once you have one, what's next? Maintaining and updating? Updating aesthetics? Remaking it to go from personal to business?

@ifbookspod.bsky.social could you do Supercommunicators by Charles Duhigg?? The vibe I'm getting is, white man discovers the best ways to communicate and they're exactly what women have been doing all along.

Angled photo of a page in the SciAm February issue. The title reads, The Astronaut Club: a close look at every person who's ever gone to space. Angled photo revealing a page in the SciAm Feb issue covered in multi-colored rectangles representing individuals, each with a different collection of symbols encoding information about their trips to space.

Wouldn't have been possible without the amazing graphics team at SciAm, @jenchristiansen.com, @unamandita.bsky.social, and space feature editor @clarakm.bsky.social.

Hold the Line β€” Loud Numbers

While parts of LA are burning the sonification of LoudNubers comes to mind: they created a data sonification on the wildfires of Canada 2023. Eerie, disturbing and admirable piece. The data is sonified with different sounds and layers, narrated by a survivor.
