I feel like people are much better at doing this with episodic stuff, but you can also have a serialised show with an over arching plot & character development AND throw away gags
Especially when its never mentioned again. No the writers isn’t bad, no they’re not going to expand on that… because it was a gag.
Let writers use characters to say something funny without it altering your entire perception of the character. There will be tonal indicators when you should pay attention and when you should laugh, and when its both
