Innes Hope Pearse, co-founder of Peckham Experiment which researched what creates well-being and good health. Members of the local community were invited to join and had access to leisure & exercise facilities. They underwent medical checks and patients were actively involved in any treatment.

Fanny Wilkinson didnโ€™t get to design many gardens around Bloomsbury. Red Lion Square in Holborn is one of the few nearby. Very good to see the recently installed plaque there.

1/3 Childrenโ€™s writer E (Edith) Nesbit whose books include The Railway Children & The Treasure Seekers was born in Kennington 1858. The family moved around when she was young but later settled in Lewisham. She married journalist Hubert Bland in 1880.

So helpful for planning a literary walk if the author marks a fictional location on a real map! I expect it helped that when Michael Sadler wrote Forlorn Sunset who was working at his publisher.

High Road, Leyton in late 19th cent. Rosa Lewis nรฉe Ovenden (1867-1952), lived here when young. Entering domestic service aged 12, she became a highly esteemed society cook. A successful businesswoman, she bought The Cavendish, Jermyn Street, London in 1902, & ran the hotel until mid 1940s. #WHM2025

Enjoying exploring this. Discovered that pupils of #Leytonstone High School for Girls -now LeytonstoneSch - contributed ยฃ66 (almost ยฃ4000 at todayโ€™s value) to Scottish Womenโ€™s Hospital in WW1 and their Gym teacher served with them in Syria. @lbwfarchives.bsky.social
