A thematic session on “Cities and Regions at the Edge” convened mayors and local government actors to discuss the importance of nature-based and “soft” solutions for building #coastal #resilience and safeguard communities. #Ocean
Opening with a “haunting journey” along the River Liffey and the environment of the Dublin Port, a thematic session on “Ports, Cities and Regions: United for a #Resilient Future” focused upon the efforts of ports and port cities to advance policy and action on #climate adaptation and resilience.
A thematic session on “financial strategies, partnerships, and engineering for coastal cities and regions” brought together policy makers and representatives of public development banks to discuss #financial mechanisms and programmes for coastal cities and regions, and ways to scale them up. #Ocean
In a thematic session on multi-level governance of #coastal cities and regions, panelists shared experiences and presented governance approaches addressing coastal #adaptation and #resilience, focusing on multi-level #governance and engagement of multiple stakeholders for the blue economy.
In a thematic session on moving “From data collection to risk assessment,” panelists from local authorities and global observation systems discussed enabling factors required for locally adapted responses to #coastal risks, including participatory decision making and public-private partnerships.
In a thematic session on “Putting Science at the Heart of Coastal Cities and Regions’ Adaptation,” panelists shared tangible examples of how science can support decision making at the local level, including complementarities between local knowledge and technological solutions. #Ocean #adaptation
Underscoring the need to transition away from fossil fuels and scale up the deployment of #renewable energies, John Kerry, Former Secretary of State and Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, US, urged delegates to “fight back against greed, selfishness, and comfort with the status quo." #Ocean
"The #Ocean cannot be negotiated, but must be protected." Speaking for Latin America’s first relocated community due to sea-level rise, Adriano Pérez, General Chief of Guna Yala Comarca, Panama, called for an alliance between international governing bodies, local authorities, and Indigenous Peoples.
Underscoring that the #Ocean Rise & Coastal Resilience #Coalition aims not only to survive the rising tides, but to enable a “livable, inclusive, and dignified future for all,” Loreley Picourt, Executive Director, Ocean & Climate Platform presented the Coalition’s mandate.
Noting the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, LaToya Cantrell, Mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana, shared insights about the city’s efforts toward recovery and risk preparedness, highlighting the importance of solidarity, collaboration, and bottom-up action. #Ocean #DRR #resilience
Feleti P. Teo, Prime Minister of Tuvalu, stressed "no one is immune to #climatechange," emphasizing that sea-level rise is a global phenomenon requiring collective and equitable global action.
Franz Tattenbach Capra, Minister of Environment and Energy, Costa Rica, called for building a global alliance for #coastal resilience through knowledge sharing and partnership, urging to "leave no coastal zone behind."
Peter Thomson, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the #Ocean, emphasized the urgent need to strengthen global #cooperation to address sea-level rise, highlighting a “deep moral malaise if we turn a blind eye to the problems we are creating to future generations.”
Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, highlighted the importance of the #Ocean Rise & Coastal Resilience #Coalition in mobilizing leadership and finance, disseminating knowledge, building capacity, and amplifying coastal voices in international Ocean #governance.
