Buildings, trees, hills, etc. are seen as bumps by the atmosphere. These objects are obstacles that impede the flow of air. Compared to land, river water is a relatively flat surface. So, the faster wind speeds you measured as you approached the river could have been the true “unobstructed” wind!

I saw a couple nice explanations, certainly a strong current could increase the wind speed by an upward transfer of momentum.

I’d like to offer another idea possible explanation which is that we tend to observe the wind in general is faster over water than land because of friction.

It was ubiquitious for a while in the 80s. It had a video of him singing & dancing (awkwardly) in a trenchcoat, made cheaply & quickly in order to release it to MTV. It was an UNEXPECTED hit... but so was what happened years later. It became a viral joke; people called it "RickRolling." You'd open an email, expecting one thing - & instead get a clip of the video: "Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around & desert you." It was an EPIDEMIC of Rick Rolling. People HATED it. Haaaated. But after a while, things flipped. Time passed, & RickRolling stopped, gradually & eventually almost completely... & it became a nostalgia thing. Astley himself has noted that RickRolling revitalised what had become a mostly dead career. He is more famous now than he was even at the height of the song's popularity. And he has a terrific sense of humour about it - essential when you've become an international practical joke & meme, immortalised for being one of the most annoying things in the history of the internet... I CAN ONLY ASPIRE to this level of IRRITATING. But give me time. GIVE ME TIME. At this writing I'm being blocked by 1,472 people. It was once well over 2K. I can only assume it's gone down because those other accounts went dark. There's no way people UNBLOCKED me. If you've blocked me, it's either because you're one of those dipshits who instantly blocks whoever's on whatever list your friends send you (in which case, good riddance, I have no interest in anyone who doesn't bother to CHECK before unilaterally blocking people on lists with a titles like "Blocked On Sight Weirdos" or "Embarrassingly Midlib." Go fuck yourself.) - OR you find me insufferable. Which is - FAIR. No argument there. So - I'm ON MY WAY to RickRolling Level Annoying. Onward! 😈
