It increasingly seems like one of the biggest problems in game design is a lack of developer confidence. It's like everyone's waiting to get rich & famous to start making cool, which doesn't pan out cuz even the big boi devs are just chasing the bigger fish and talk like they're prisoners still

I feel like a lot of make-your-own-difficulty stuff is in part driven by devs being insecure about their own difficulty balancing. Cuz if you give players all these opt-out features, if a difficulty mode's poorly balanced then it's not on the devs, it's on the players for not using OP stuff
people should really fact check and research before believing random stuff online. if it’s not from a reputable source, you should not trust it right away

People who talk about game design and view games as art should make more analogies to other artforms & see if it sounds right in that context. A lot of conventional "design wisdom" sounds like absolutely bonkers corporate unofficial marketing wing nonsense when you apply it to any other medium
