Why exercise isn't much help if you are trying to lose weight When we exercise more, our bodies may compensate by using less energy for other things – especially if we eat less too

I am sure this is the ‘lived experience’ of many - aerobic exercise doesn’t help weight loss. Combining it with diet restrictions seems even worse.

BMI has long been used to determine someone's health, but it is deeply flawed. Better measures of body fat exist – and they are finally catching on, finds Starre Vartan

The daring idea that time is an illusion and how we could prove it The way time ticks forward in our universe has long stumped physicists. Now, a new set of tools from entangled atoms to black holes promises to reveal time’s true nature

Apparently Time is an Illusion!
This is supposed to be Physics (Quantum Physics) but has no resemblance to the Physics I learned at school (admittedly 30 yrs back). This reads more like philosophy or science fiction!

Right now I am on a 30 week streak of activities (at least one run or walk a week). Hope I will be able to sustain the streak!

Made an effort to be more physically active in 2025 and this is how it turned out.
Ran 701 out of 838 km and walked 134 km.
I stopped going on bike rides in 2025 & that explains the lower distance (despite days active being more) Vs 2024.

Well, it was not all music on #Spotify though!
#Nephrology is also ‘music’ to my ears!
@freelyfiltered.bsky.social is giving me company during my travel these days!

I am a 78 year old ‘thaatha’ (grand father) as per #SpotifyWrapped2025, based on my listening habits 🫣
Well, if you think ‘name calling’ will stop me from listening to Ilayaraja, Janaki and Mukesh, you are mistaken, @spotifyindia.bsky.social! 😂

I am willing to go the extent of saying the greatest loss COVID 19 inflicted was on South Indian music, with #SPB succumbing to it 😔

Melodies are my ‘go to’ genre, that too the ‘melancholy’ types. No surprise #SpotifyWrapped2025 put me into the ‘soft hearts’ club!

#SpotifyWrapped2025
Music (listening, no singing) has been an integral part of my life for decades and 2025 was no different.
While it started with audio cassettes in the 90s & passed through CDs, iPOD & Musicolet App on my phone, #Spotify has been the staple for past few years.

Something so fundamental to understanding and interpreting health parameters, yet not understood by most lay people. Thanks @thehindu.com for having such a worthy article occupy precious newspaper space!

I am now on a 22 weeks streak, running at least twice a week. The typical activity session is a 5 km run + 2km walking. Sunday long runs are 'bonus'!
Hoping to sustain the streak.

I am not an expert & can't give authoritative advice.
I am reminded of the Malayalam saying
'പയ്യെ തിന്നാൽ പനയും തിന്നാം' (you can eat even a whole palm tree, if you go at it slowly). I started with short runs at slow pace, with gradual increments. I started running in '14 but has been consistent from Jan '24

The BICAR-ICU-2 trial just dropped!

RCT involving IV bicarb in metabolic acidosis among patients with mod-severe AKI

Bicarb didn't affect mortality but it reduced the need for dialysis & risk of bacteremia

VERY similar conclusions to BICAR-ICU-1

From MRI to Ozempic: breakthroughs that show why fundamental research must be protected In these financially straitened times, funders must recognize that great discoveries often arise from work that was looking for something completely different.

Agree with you on the political angle - if someone moved to BlueSky to stay away from all the political drama, they were fooled. Only difference is that it is one sided on BlueSky.
I wish people kept both accounts & discussed science & Nephrology in BlueSky & politics in Twitter!

If this is not a calamity, what is?
172,000 people died in 2023 on Indian roads, translating into 1317 accidents & 474 deaths every day or 55 accidents and 20 deaths every hour!! 🫢
Most of them in young & productive age.
This is worse than dropping a nuclear bomb!
