I was talking to others and I was thinking how sometimes even genuine gratitude can be enough.

Like if you asked me to spend 15 min reading your blog and 5 min to write my feedback, I don't need 20 min of your editing time. A good, solid thanks is probably enough esp if we have a relationship.

Yeah, and there's a lot of context/nuance with these types of requests, right?

Factors like: when I need it done by (strict timeline vs "when you're free"), the scope of the project (prof product for $ vs for fun for free), and even just our relationship (stranger, community member, friend).

Anyways, I bought a copy of The Gift by Lewis Hyde. Excited to sit down and start going through it lol.

Will it be equivalent? It's impossible to tell.

But that's the point.

It's not a zero sum game. It's community.

But I think this is where we need to foster communities, where we can socially be "indebted" to each other.

Maybe I've "spent" the time editing other peoples' subclasses "for free". So when I need help, I can ask for that "social debt" to be paid back to me.

Like a lot of folks could use a hand when publishing like a D&D subclass or something. There's a good chance that it'll go on DMs Guild and make a few bucks.

It's tough to give $30 to someone to proofread/edit it when you really only expect to make $10 tops.

I've been thinking a lot about unpaid labour - not FREE labour, but work where there isn't money exchanged.

It's a tough conversation to have in the TTRPG space because obviously we want people to be treated fairly - and money is a shortcut to that.

But some projects just don't have cash in 'em.
