How China’s universities joined the global elite Investment by Beijing has transformed the country’s institutions despite lingering questions about research quality and intellectual freedom

“The damage being done to the research enterprise across our top US universities stands in marked contrast to the systematic efforts in China to support major scientific initiatives”

You know who really has a good vantage on what universities can and should be? Faculty. Not always the organizational structure and operation, because that's not the job, But what it takes to educate? Yep. Yet the overwhelming media coverage is by and about ppl w very little to no experience.

Screwworm imported from Argentina, caught at border inspection in Florida. The interception isn't itself cause for alarm and shows the government is still functioning.

Still, it's a demonstration of propagule pressure, and the re-establishment of screwworm here is likely a matter of when, not if.

Don’t apply to grad school as a robot, people. Your goal is to stand out, and gen-AI makes you look generic.

As Arizona groundwater disappears, an agricultural giant agrees to use less Agriculture has been free to use Arizona's groundwater, but as water levels drop, the state may have hit a turning point.

Update: One of Arizona’s largest farming businesses has agreed to leave some croplands dry and pay $11 million to help residents whose wells have gone dry. @azagmayes.bsky.social says the legal settlement came after a year of ‘hard-fought’ negotiations. www.latimes.com/environment/...
