An ACORN member fled home after their landlord's behaviour left them feeling threatened & unsafe. Further harassment led us to march on the estate agencies he uses; which secured a face-to-face meeting to hear & make good on our member's demands.

Despite the aggressive and unprofessional conducts from the landlords, all ACORN members remained polite, considerate, and professional. We are not asking the landlords to fetch us the moon. We just want him to give our members their money back! (6)

In July, we decided to try to meet Nikki and Sion's landlord again by visiting the address listed in their contract - which is in Newport. A group of us went with Nikki, who brought with her all the necessary documents and evidence to make it easy for the landlord. At last, we met the man! (5)

To recap:
- Emails: Ignored ❌
- Invitation to meet in person: Declined ❌
- Phone call: Responded to with threats of physical violence 💥
So far, NOT so good at all. But £730 worth of deposit (not to mention interest) is too big of an amount for our members and so ACORN could not give up! (4)

But what if we deliver a physical letter ✉️ to the landlord? That would be hard to ignore, right 🤔? So, in June, a group of us visited one of the landlord’s businesses, Heavenly Desserts in Cardiff. Here’s how that went 👇

Over the past couple of months, ACORN Cardiff have been taking on the case of our members Nikki and Sion, whose deposit has been unfairly withheld by their landlord for 8 months!

Headline from the Guardian: Cardiff council warns tenants of eviction if household member convicted for Ely riots If individuals are convicted and sentenced, council may go to court to seek repossession of their home, letters said.

Cardiff Council are trying to kick 17 families out of their homes for alleged links to the 2023 riots.
This is disgraceful behaviour from the council. They have no desire to help those in need and instead look to punish those who were expressing anger over a devastating event in their community.

Most importantly: There will be food and drinks at the meeting. You are also more than welcome to bring picky bits to share with others.

Households on the lowest incomes spend more than three times as much of their income on Council Tax as the richest. Tens of thousands of families are struggling to keep up with extortionate council tax rates, and bailiff companies are making millions from robbing them. We aren't going to put up with these lowlife scum thinking they can rip us off. After Ashley and Kate reached out to ACORN, we mobilised members to help them draft a letter of demands, followed by organising two marches to The Rent Guru’s office. After our interventions, The Rent Guru have agreed to waive the unreasonable fees as well as arranging the necessary maintenance.
