Some very kind blurbs:
"James Kneale combines groundbreaking analysis of the business of
temperanceβ€”life assurance companiesβ€”with exhaustive research. This is a marvelous book and an important one. Yes, it matters for temperance scholars but for others too, both in Britain and internationally." David M. Fahey, Professor of History Emeritus, Miami University, USA.

"Kneale masterfully employs the tools of geography and history to trace the intricate networks defined and exposed by temperance life
assurance. His meticulous excavation of the relationships that everyday people had with temperance is essential reading for anyone interested in the way temperance influenced the lives of Victorian Britain." Dan Malleck, Professor, Brock University, Canada.

In the mid 1860s, a young Octavia Farmbrough started a project. She'd ask local people questions and record their responses in a scrapbook. There are hundreds of pages filled out with these responses that give a glimpse into the interests of these Victorians, and we're very lucky to have it today.

I am correcting undergrad theses now, so I have a whole list of pet peeves. One is, gerunds are the enemy. They do not make your writing elegant, and half the time they will not refer back to the noun you intended.

Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

Old trees are frickin ace. If I had my time again I would love to be a tree historian. This oak stands at the Gate of the Dead in Wrexham. It’s thought to be over 1200 years old. It was the site of a battle btn the English and Wales in 1165. I wonder what other small&big things it been witness too.

A podcast cover featuring Franz Halz' 'Portrait of a Bearded Man with a Ruff,' his face covered with a turquoise scribble and handwritten yellow script reading 'This Guy Sucked'

Eight weeks ago, I jokingly imagined a podcast where scholars could (expertly) hate on historical figures. Almost 100,000 people thought it was a good idea.

I am so incredibly excited to announce that the first episodes of my brand new show This Guy Sucked will be released March 20th!
