to put it another way, the promise of "you can go anywhere" is freedom, but "you can go anywhere, just not in the cellar, or outside during the day" is narrative. something doesn't have to be impactful to be meaningful, and that's true of chargen (which ofc can also be impactful and meaningless)

I think a lot of designers get it in their head that chargen is an entirely freedom-focused feature and therefore something that detracts from a focused storytelling effort, when really, it can (intentionally and otherwise) be an extremely firm narrative statement even if it's not impactful

spending like three hours trying to get my horse drunk because I can't google it and find out that it's impossible, narrowly avoiding instigating the sort of tragedy that would be recorded with the year in the name
