Secret review: I loved this film so much, there was so much research that went into folk music traditions, and centered the significance of artistic expression as direct connection to the past, present, and future. Ryan Coogler offers such a complex interpretation of vampire lore that makes me think of the deeply human worlds crafter by Octavia Butler, and offers up a perfect villain. I also cannot get over the DETAILS. Down to the significance of each of the costuming choices!!! The tailoring and materiality of the suits play SO MUCH significance to the characters, and literally it feels like every damn moment is so intentionally selected to offer up such a layered telling of the story. Visually symphonic! Also just… like Coogler threads such a tight needle for me with this film conceptually. Like a Jim Crow era vampire comedy involving Michael B Jordan getting “parent trap” movie magicked into nearly cartoonish twin gangsters could have been corny af; and the film’s setting could have needlessly added to the sometimes retraumatizing cinematic torture porn tropes around American slavery… Yet in the hands of this production crew it is a film that never punches down, and truly honors a myriad of conversations and mythologies of Americana, and I could watch Sinners over and over forever picking out new details. Wait also just. The blues. The music. Goddamn. Miles Caton’s debut as an actor is just mind boggling. The performances in the film will bring fucking tears to your eyes. If you are able to see it in theaters, please try to. As much as I loved the film, I EQUALLY loved experiencing in a room full of strangers that screamed, laughed, jolted, cheered, and sighed together. That is not all I am thinking, but that is all that I will write without giving away spoilers. Thanks for reading!
