A fairly new PhD student with a broader focus on all canine hookworms, but specifically the genomics and transcriptomics of Uncinaria stenocephala. U. stenocephala is frequently overlooked despite being ubiquitous in temperate regions!

This lace monitor was hit by a car and is settling in nicely! All animals regardless of how dangerous deserve respect, calm and appropriate care! #addHerper

🩺 War injuries in Gaza

International doctors reported nearly 24,000 trauma cases: widespread burns, blast wounds, and limb injuries, alongside thousands needing chronic care support.

Photoinduced double charge accumulation in a molecular compound - Nature Chemistry The photoinduced accumulation of redox equivalents is a challenging requirement for artificial photosynthesis. Now a molecule has been developed in which the sequential absorption of photons results in the temporary accumulation of two holes and two electrons. The employed strategy opens up new possibilities for charge accumulation under low photon densities.

The results of a study in Nature Chemistry represent a step towards more application-oriented research on solar fuels from fundamental studies of photoinduced (single) electron transfer. #chemsky 🧪

Long-term parasite decline associated with near extinction and conservation of the critically endangered kākāpō parrot Boast et al. analyze a unique fecal record of the endangered kākāpō parrot to reveal >800 years of changing parasite communities. Parasite losses occur during the species’ decline to near extinction a...

The decline of vertebrate biodiversity has catastrophic knock-on effects for invertabrate parasite biodiversity. The population collapse and near extinction of the kākāpō parrot led to the extinction of most of their endoparasite taxa. Parasite extinctions are likely wildly underestimated. 🧪 #vetmed

We need screening now before resistance is at outbreak levels in human medicine, much like it is in canine medicine. #health #hookworms #medicine #NTD #science

Widespread occurrence of benzimidazole resistance single nucleotide polymorphisms in the canine hookworm, Ancylostoma caninum, in Australia Canine hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum), a gastrointestinal nematode of domestic dogs, principally infects the small intestine of dogs and has the poten…

A past study of ours compared the genetic frequency of resistance in mixed samples to that of clinical resistance (inability to suppress development) and we found that there’s a threshold of ~ 75% resistant mutants required to induce clinical resistance 🧵 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

If there’s any resemblance to the outbreaks of resistance in Australia, Canada, America and India for canine hooks then it’s likely that resistance will be widespread in human hooks in the absence of drug-stewardship! 🧵

It means the widespread mutations Q134Y, F167Y, E198A and F200L causative to resistance in dog hooks that are already documented in human hooks are now known to be causal to benzimidazole resistance. 🧵

Characterisation of β-tubulin isotypes in Uncinaria stenocephala and implications for benzimidazole resistance in hookworms Uncinaria stenocephala is a widespread hookworm of dogs across Europe, Canada, southern Australia, and other temperate regions, where it often outnumbers infections caused by Ancylostoma caninum . Alt...

🚨‼️ This paper has evidence of universal resistance in hookworms to benzimidazoles! We sequenced a gene causal to drug resistance in hookworms… including a never before sequenced hookworm of dogs! What does this mean? 🧵 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Studying How Seals Adapt to Extreme Environments Could Lead to Benefits in Human Reproductive Health What can wild animals teach us about human reproduction?

“wild animals navigating their natural world can provide new perspectives regarding important issues in reproductive health. …we should be looking to the extraordinary feats of wild animals -- they have often found the most innovative solutions,"

We’re experiencing perhaps the worst flu season in 25 years, with severe cases also rising, and young children and seniors faring the worst. One in six of all ER visits in the 0-17 age groups are now for influenza.

🧬 Highest level of intraspecific genome size seen by you or a colleague? Background: WGS of a novel hookworm, significant variation among 2 worms from same host 🤔💭 #genomics, #genetics, #evolution, #parasitology
