Hey, my students are trying their hardest to lurk college. (Irony aside, I do feel like that’s one of the things I am needing to explain, that lurking in a 20 person class isn’t really an option. I can see them.)

Every time I read back through my (finite, reverse chronological) feed, I come across something where I’m like “damn, seems complicated and I don’t have an informed opinion.” Which I think is the part of social media that I like?

I see my mutuals having strikingly different opinions on their governors, on AI-assisted coding, on MOOCs, on that notepad that the NYT wrote about. Just not on human rights I guess?

On Bluesky it’s mostly people I might “know” well enough to chat if we happened to be at the same conference (though there are exceptions). And maybe this discourse is passé, but I’m struck by how not an echo chamber it is, about all kinds of interesting things.

Not to be all “I’m doing this right and everyone else is wrong,” but the only social media I’ve had for a while is Bluesky and Tumblr (lol sorry.) I don’t use an algorithmic feed on either, and in both cases, I try to only follow people that I have some real connection with.

There seems to be an interesting divide among people who immediately twig to this line of reasoning and get mad about it (I am one of these) and people who are like “eh, you know what they mean.”

Maybe some of y’all had better parents, but I don’t play rigged games, you know?

No matter what, you just didn’t do it right. And the prescription is vague enough that it allows for any failure to be put on the person, not the thing. “The supplements didn’t work for you? You were using the wrong brand, do your research.”

I think this is a common kind of scammy rhetorical construction that makes people mad, because it sets up a world in which the thing cannot fail, it can only be failed. I actually associate this most with diets, but it also appears a lot for Agile.

I think all the time about how much we could knock down community transmission if people just masked where it’s easy, and how much safer that would make places where mitigation is hard, like nursing homes.
