It might actually be good for the transition that somewhere is volunteering to be the control population.

Coming right after hearing Common People on the radio, this might be too much nostalgia for one afternoon

If I ever need to do a Sankey diagram for work I fear I may get fired due to my irresistible urge to label one small endpoint "came in fluffer"

'This is fine' meme. Cartoon dog sitting on a chair in a burning room, cup of coffee on the table, speechbubble saying "this is fine"

Just think how bad things would be if the war hadn't already been won

"I'm going to tax the rich to pay for my project to put other ethnicities in death camps" ~ Hypothetical politician

"Wow this guy sounds cool, he wants to tax the rich" ~ you, probably

.. so you're best to put any spare energy in the battery and then the heat pump can use it.

Yeah if you're planning to get a heat pump soon-ish then a diverter doesn't make sense. It's so much more efficient to use the heat pump to heat the water cylinder at ~350% efficiency than use a diverter to drive an immersion heater to heat it at 100%...

Where does new nuclear come in? Well the nuclear industry needs to start promising less and achieving more, frankly.

Storage is similar to transmission in some ways, but allowing sharing across time rather than distance. It's important, but needs to be seen as part of the transmission project, not an alternative to it.

Over the last decade or so, wind and solar have been shown to be the fastest and cheapest method. Modelling indicates that this option is far from exhausted.
To get further the most critical thing is to reinforce the transmission network so intermittent energy is shared more effectively.

Why construct a hypothetical that's irrelevant to the question at hand? The European grid is not small - quite the reverse. It also has substantial existing hydro and nuclear. The goal is to eliminate fossil as fast as possible. There is not likely to be a single answer to that.

in response to a survey saying 1 in 8 men think they could win a point against Serena Williams:
"Confident in my ability to properly tennis, I take the court. I smile at my opponent. Serena does not return the gesture. She'd be prettier if she did, I think. She serves. The ball passes cleanly through my skull, killing me instantly "

Literal case of 'your mileage may vary'.
EVs are less complex than ICE. Now the tech is mature, they are more reliable. A hybrid with both E & ICE powertrains is more complex than either.
EV range is now in the hundreds of km, so unless you regularly go further, they are likely to be the best option
