.. so you're best to put any spare energy in the battery and then the heat pump can use it.
Yeah if you're planning to get a heat pump soon-ish then a diverter doesn't make sense. It's so much more efficient to use the heat pump to heat the water cylinder at ~350% efficiency than use a diverter to drive an immersion heater to heat it at 100%...
The Taliban is woke now, didn't you hear?
Where does new nuclear come in? Well the nuclear industry needs to start promising less and achieving more, frankly.
Storage is similar to transmission in some ways, but allowing sharing across time rather than distance. It's important, but needs to be seen as part of the transmission project, not an alternative to it.
Over the last decade or so, wind and solar have been shown to be the fastest and cheapest method. Modelling indicates that this option is far from exhausted.
To get further the most critical thing is to reinforce the transmission network so intermittent energy is shared more effectively.
Why construct a hypothetical that's irrelevant to the question at hand? The European grid is not small - quite the reverse. It also has substantial existing hydro and nuclear. The goal is to eliminate fossil as fast as possible. There is not likely to be a single answer to that.
