The cover of Don't Steal This Book, a blank book "written" by 10,000 authors protesting Big Tech's use of their work to train LLMs.

I’m one of the ten thousand authors of this big 'blank' book, published today on the first day of the London Book Fair by the Society of Authors. It’s a plea to Big Tech to stop stealing the work of individual writers, artists and journalists.

I am shocked to learn this is actually underestimating costs, because it ignores the infrastructure costs.

This video is lowballing it.

Someone probably asked that before, but why did she choose to go for the second skin? (can imagine it is easier to go around with more human look?)

The world is, no matter how we think it ought to be. You have to be with it. You have to let it be.

Never in my life had I thought of a more glorious steed than a manatee. Can you imagine jousting?

People see the scars. But they see you, too, and you aren't the scars. You aren't ugly. You aren't evil. You are Therru, and beautiful. You are Therru who can work, and walk, and run, and dance, beautifully, in a red dress.

SAM ALTMAN: "People talk about how much energy it takes to train an Al model ... But it also takes a lot of energy to train a human. It takes like 20 years of life and all of the food you eat during that time before you get smart."

β€œEvil starts when you treat other people as things. There are perhaps worse crimes, but they begin when you treat other people as things.” - Terry Pratchett

I need a "who is this sword" version. Just so can scream entusiastically at the screen, you know.

I've seen some similar projects, but IMO this seems to better capture some of the fine-grained detail

#FebruaryWorldbuilders

Every person is born with an inner world called a myslemir. It exists within the soul and holds the person's mind. A person's myslemir changes as they grow and reflects that person in some way. It can look like anything: the indoors, the outdoors, a weird dreamscape, empty

Ages ago (around covid and all those fun things) there was an interesting article on our news about psychologists trying to explain that. Something about people finding comfort in "solid" beliefs and unwilling to leave that comfort zone when challenged. Either way, its sad to see.

Got me a good laugh here 😁
I wonder what she would say to an European saying that it feels like US is half Christian and it is going to start theocracy any day now, and anybody that critizes its leader... umm. Whoa. This is creepy. (anyway sorry to hear this BS got to her brain!)

Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

"Out of my curiosity..." (sometimes I wonder if my coworkers dread when I start my sentence with that)

Of all the easy things you can do to help the environment, conserve water for communities not corporations, not perpetuate scams, support the labor and rights of creators... *not* using generative AI is the fucking easiest. You absolutely deserve to be shamed for using it for image and text creation

Why oh why is the internet full of quacks that claim this or that can cure everything. Forget that its damaging to people dealing with actual issues, think about more naive people (like parents of cancer patients, hint hint) falling for their bullshittery.

Rant over. Sigh.
