A tweet from Alix E. Harrow (@AlixEHarrow):

got into an argument with my 4yo about whether the word "dragon" starts with a J or a D and now i'm just repeating the word "jragon" to myself wondering why it doesn't sound any different.

So genuinely this fascinated me when I first started working on my own conlang:

J isn't its own sound. It's just a very punctuated version of the French "J" sound (In IPA, Κ’, something like "Zh") trying to imitate a voiced dental plosive (like D).

Which you can hear if you remove the R: [D/J]agon.

a portrait of a young vampire woman (my character from a Vampire The Masquerade chronicle, a malkavian), her skin is pale with purple undertones, her complexion is veiny and tired. her hair is black, with a streak of white over her right side, her eyelash and brown are also white over that side.

Piedad forever tired face. Something I've been sketching between commission work as warmup.

Man.

The world fucking is on fire.

So go be as corny and cringe as you wanna be without hurting people.

Live whats left of your only life.

If you can’t be free in your body at least go be free in your mind and soul.

Fuck the haters.

we are weeks away from 'Trump attempts to make horse a Senator' and the only thing stopping him is that he is too much of a sociopath to form an attachment to animals

The scene depicts an avian creature crouching astride a man, talons pinning him in-place on the snow ladened ground. Surrounded by the corpses of birds. A rifle can be seen on the floor in the forground.

These ghostly sculptural works by Jakub Hadrava have been created for this old abandoned church in a tiny Czech village, both giving the space a new lease of creativity - while remembering the past. Haunting and melancholic, do you find these sculptures unsettling, or quietly thought-provoking?

They've released a number of "how to identify AI" videos which are very informative, and this recent video, as I said, was done all with their own training data. I do not believe they have taken an official stance, and personally might still use it, but as a brand they seem to be *trying* more.

the trad idea that women one or more generations ago didn't have to work is such an obvious fiction I'm surprised people keep repeating it. I had two working parents and so did basically everyone I knew growing up. both of my grandmothers worked.

Diagram of how water towers work, showing pumping station, pressure created, and water wants to return to this level.

In suburban spaces, it's common for the potable water tower to be the dominant aspect of the skyline, so it's ironic how little we think about these giant structures.

Water is pumped up into the above-ground tank & gravity pushes it through the water supply right out to your sink/toilet/bathtub.

If I had a nickel for every time Franz Ferdinand was involved in the precursor events of a world war, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice

I don't have all the answers here, but it's something I can't help but think about.

I mostly just wish the promise of tomorrow hadn't been taken away from us.

Really the only way for gen AI to be alright at this point would be to somehow go back and start again from the beginning. Otherwise it's like, oh yeah here's the good example of the machine everyone else is using to club baby seals and off gas nuclear waste. Maybe the machine isn't worth it? --

medical tech, weather prediction, ecosystem preservation, manufacturing optimization and emission reduction, OCR and basic translations, data analytics, all kinds of labor reducing automation... really a bunch of things.

But all of that gets weighed against the MONSTER that the rest of it is. --

Oh I know, that's why I made it clear it was entirely ethical. Even the ~40 hours of power is probably less than it would have needed to power the system for the months it would have taken to key in any one of those frames, and even then only to train it. GANs are extremely useful for --
